We know the value of community involvement and partnership with law enforcement. The birth of community oriented policing such as Neighborhood Watches and many similar programs have opened up communication and cooperation from citizens like never before.
In communities around the country, including Plainfield, law enforcement hold regular community meetings to talk about crime. They share methods of prevention and offer resources for support and help. They are in our schools reaching out to our children, and are open to sharing information.
Today, thanks to social media, information sharing and transparency have become synonymous. This transparency is truly law enforcement's best friend. Especially in light of events that have transpired across the nation in recent years, which seem to cast police officers in a less than savory light. While I firmly believe that Law enforcement officers who abuse their power, and disrespect law-abiding citizens are the minority, I am in support of any initiative that propagates further transparency and partnership between law enforcement and the community, and therefore, am a proponent of body cameras being worn by all officers on duty.
(I am pleased to announce that we have taken steps to equip our local police force with a large number of these and anticipate that it will only serve to highlight the partnership enjoyed between law enforcement and our community.)
The past culture of secrecy exhibited by many law enforcement agencies combined with less than ethical behavior exhibited by a very small minority has contributed greatly to distrust of the police in many communities. We cannot dispute that there are things that need to remain confidential. Transparency does not involve divulging privileged information. Being transparent means empowering our citizens with information so they can appreciate, understand, support, and trust our police agency and staff to do the right thing for all citizens in our community.
I encourage other counties and municipalities in New Jersey to invest in body cameras, as Union County and the City of Plainfield have done, so as to create a much needed layer of transparency that will improve relations between law enforcement and the community while at the same time protecting both the police and the public from false allegations and from the use of excessive force.

Division of Public Affairs and Safety: Community Meeting
|
Mayor Adrian Mapp, Director of Public Safety and Police Director Carl Riley, and Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park participated in a community meeting regarding new initiatives to increase transparency between law enforcement and the public. The meeting took place on Wednesday, October 7 , 2015 in the Anne Louise Davis Room of the Plainfield Public Library, 800 Park Ave, Plainfield. The discussion was regarding protocols governing investigations into use of force by police officers and a new body-worn camera pilot program that will be launched within the City. CONGRATULATIONS to the Plainfield Police Division's newest graduates -Officer Carlos Maldonaldo, Officer Roberto Roman, Officer Marcelo Lopez Vasco, Officer Gregory Peterson, Officer Bernard Waddell, Officer Michael Gordon, and Officer Andrew Crawford. These officers graduated from the Passaic County Police Academy in Wayne, New Jersey on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 and are now assigned to a seasoned training officer within the Plainfield Police Division. We welcome the new officers to the Plainfield Police Division.

The Annual Plainfield Fire Division Fire Prevention Fair will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015. The hours of the event will be 10:00am until 3:00pm. It will be held in the 100 block of North Avenue (main train station). The event will include a Car Seat Check station, games and activities for children, a DJ, the Hopper (Happy Jump) House, the Plainfield Fire Division Smoke House, and several fire division demonstrations. We also will kick off Fire Prevention Month with a free Smoke Detector Program sponsored by the American Red Cross.
All ages are welcome to attend!

Evangel Church: Service for Service
Evangel Church's "Service For Service" will be held on Sunday, October 11th, 2015 from 8:00am to 2:00pm. It is a community wide activity where hundreds of volunteers will be working in Plainfield on various community clean-up projects. Evangel Church would also like to do something special for the fire fighters and police officers on that day, specifically a meal or a snack. Additionally, a smaller group led by the First Unitarian Society will clean-up and do planting at Library Park. The project sites are as follows:
- Hannah Atkins Playground
- Mathewson Playground
- Seidler Field
- Drake House - Clean up and restoration
- City Hall - Mural
- Salvation Army - Internal painting
- Habitat For Humanity - 7th Avenue new houses landscaping
- Thruway clean up - Small teams of 5 doing litter removal in the following areas:

- Watchung Ave
- Front Street
- Leland Avenue
- South Avenue

Columbus Day Observance - Center Closed
The center will be closed in observance of Columbus Day from Saturday, October 10th through Monday, October 12th. The center will re-open on Tuesday, October 13th at 9:00 a.m. for regular services.
FLU SHOTS
Flu shots will be given at the center by the Plainfield Health Department on Wednesday, October 14th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If you would like more info about the flu shots, see Colin Baptiste. Sign up now.
AARP DRIVER'S ED COURSE
AARP Driver Safety Program is designed for motorists age 50 and older. The six-hour course will be taught in two-three hour sessions spanning two days from Thursday, October 15th to Friday, October 16th from 9:00am to 12:00noon. AARP members will be charged a $15.00 fee and non-members will be charged $20.00. Payments by cash, check or money orders are accepted and should be made payable to the AARP Instructor. Upon completion of the two-day course, students will receive a certificate of completion to send to their insurance company which will entitle them to a 5% reduction on their automobile insurance premium for three consecutive years. Those who complete the program will receive a two-point reduction on their Motor Vehicle Record. This class is not available in New York or Florida.

Tai Chi is a low-impact, relaxing form of exercise that can be completed in about 45 minutes a day. Tai Chi is a Chinese art form that focuses on the mental and spiritual aspects of movement. This meditative form of exercise consists of a series of movements that's slow and gentle and doesn't leave you feeling breathless. It addresses numerous key components of fitness: Muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and low-aerobic conditioning. Join her every Tuesday from 2:00pm to 3:00pm in the fitness room.

The Plainfield Cultural and Heritage Commission invites you and your organization to review the guidelines below and apply for a grant or mini-grant. The Plainfield Cultural and Heritage Commission is a nondiscriminatory organization, encouraging a broad base of participation among artists, organizations, and audiences. All awards are made without regard to age, race, creed, religion or national origin.

Who is eligible?

The grant or mini-grant program is designed to provide financial assistance to local artists, arts organizations, cultural purveyors, art educators and others involved in the creation of art and cultural and heritage projects. Applicants must be Plainfield-based (not necessarily a resident), and the application must
demonstrate the project's
broad impact on Plainfield and Plainfield area residents. The event must take place in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Mayor's Wellness Walk
Forty-five students from UC TEAMS Charter School were chaperoned by their teachers and guidance counselors, and seniors from Plainfield Tower West apartments, they all participated in the Mayor's Wellness Walk to celebrate life for the cure of breast cancer. The seniors who were encouraged to "GO FRESH! GET HEALTHY! were each presented with a bag of fresh fruits and vegetables at the completion of this fun, enjoyable and successful walk.
Priscilla Pyke-Angoy, City of Plainfield-Health Educator stated that 40 participants took advantage of the free health screenings, which were offered by William Mitchell and Eugenio Mendez of Horizon NJ Health and Heena Patel of Rays Pharmacy-Dunellen NJ.

Free Diabetes Program Offered in Spanish at El Centro Hispanoamericano in Plainfied
Are you living with diabetes or know someone who is? We invite you to attend a six-weeks Diabetes Self-Management Workshop series which will be conducted in SPANISH. Participants will learn about diabetes and its risks; the role of diet and exercise; how to deal with pain, fatigue and depression; how to effectively communicate with healthcare providers; managing medications and much more.
Join us for these free workshops at El Centro Hispanoamericano, located at 525 E. Front street in Plainfield.
