One Plainfield.  One Future.

The Fight for 15 Must be Waged

Working families and individuals are the backbone of our great country and the source of our achievements. Labor Day is observed on the first day of every September. On this important day, we are granted an opportunity to contemplate on the progress of working people and families, and meeting the objective to reach a milestone where everyone who works can afford to live in dignity.

Organized labor groups have been our heroes and heroines throughout our history. The path to social justice has been forged by organized labor groups who fought for child labor laws, against gruesome sweat factories, and for a voice and right to collective bargaining over benefits, working conditions, and wages.

This past Saturday I joined 32BJ SEIU in a march to celebrate the contributions and achievements of workers, and to help amplify the call for better working conditions for all workers, especially those in the services industry. As Mayor of the City of Plainfield, and as a supporter of progressive causes, I remain resolute in my support of paid sick leave and the "fight for 15".

The journey ahead of us is still a winding road. For the last 50 years, middle class workers have seen their wages held hostage as the super wealthy have taken more for themselves. As income inequality continues to worsen, we are faced with increased attacks on our retirement security which has traditionally helped sustain the quality of life for working families and individuals in the past.

As you get caught up in your daily routines, which means for some getting your children ready for school, take the opportunity to reflect on this past Labor Day Weekend while giving consideration to what you can do to meet the challenges that lie ahead for all workers.

Paid sick leave is a cause for which I stand, and the "fight for 15' is one that must be waged on every front.

Plainfield 9/11 Day of Remembrance

On the morning of Friday, September 11th, the Administration and members of the community came together to observe and share a day of remembrance to all that fell on that fateful day in 2011.  This horrid attack on America by terrorist forever changed our lives, families, and our great nation.  Not only did we lose loved ones from the planes that crashed in NYC, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, we also lost our brave men and women in uniform as they rushed to these scenes of tragedy to save lives, and in doing so - perished while saving and protecting us all.

The ceremony shared by the community centered around the chiming of bells to signify the first and second plane crashes to the Twin Towers in NYC.  The presentation of colors was followed by Reverend David Rodriguez who performed the Invocation, my remarks, SSG Bigelow from the Plainfield Armed Forces Recruitment Center, and Reverend Dr. Gary Kirkwood who gave the Benediction.

I thank all of our brave and finest in uniform: police, fire, and other first responders.
Labor Day Event
32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Third Annual Labor Day March

On Saturday, September 5th, I joined over two hundred enthusiastic members of the 32BJ SEIU for a march in downtown Plainfield.  Over two hundred office cleaners, supporters, and community leaders came out in support of the 3rd Annual labor march.

32BJ SEIU represents  over 11,000 property service workers in the state of New Jersey including office cleaners, security officers, airport workers, residential workers, cafeteria workers and school custodians. This year they are negotiating a contract that covers over 7,000 office cleaners and school custodians in over 500 office buildings and school districts throughout New Jersey. The current contract is set to terminate at the end of this year.

In just a couple of short weeks, they will be launching a contract campaign with a round of Labor Day Actions throughout New Jersey.

Below is a link to a Univision video of the Labor Day march, which is in Spanish. There are some great visuals and remarks I provided to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work of thousands of working families.

New Jersey State Update: What N.J. parents should know as they send their kids back to school
By Brittany M. Wehner | For NJ.com
on September 09, 2015 at 9:19 AM, updated September 09, 2015 at 9:30 AM
Associated Press

It's time for more pencils and more books as students head back to the classrooms for another school year.

But with a new school year, there is always change, whether it's policy, security upgrades, or new technology gear for students.
So if you're a parent, here are three things to know as you send your children off to school this week for the 2015-2016 school year:
Security
School districts have worked over the years to  enhance security to improve protection of students while on campus. The Woodstown-Pilesgrove Regional School District has been proactive in tightening security.
In 2015, the joint regional district implemented armed security to patrol the halls and this will continue.

Other districts have recently added security through camera installation.
Logan Township School District just updated the camera systemic all of the buildings, according to Superintendent Patricia Haney.
"We want to keep an eye in all aspects of our campuses to ensure we are safe," Haney said.

And in terms of an actual emergency, are students allowed to have cell phones?
Many school district's allow students to have their cell phones with them but they cannot be actively using them during class time.
However, they are permitted in lockers or cubbies in case of an emergency, according to superintendents in various school districts.

Congresswoman Bonnie Watson-Coleman: Announces Support for Iran Nuclear Agreement

August 27, 2015
Press Release
For Immediate Release
Ewing, NJ (August 27, 2015) - Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) announced her support for the P5+1 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to prevent a nuclear armed Iran:

"Since the release of the text, I have carefully considered the details of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between the P5+1 countries and Iran.  I have attended numerous classified briefings with Administration officials, met with constituents on both sides of the issue, and consulted with nuclear and foreign policy experts.  After extensive consideration, I have concluded that supporting this agreement offers the most viable option available to us to prevent Iran from manufacturing nuclear weapons.
"As a member of Congress, no issue ranks higher than protecting our national security.  It's clear to me that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose an unacceptable threat to the United States and to our closest ally in the region, Israel.   As such, I have never wavered in my opposition to any deal that lacks the strength to prevent Iran's development of nuclear weapons.  I have long said that in order to garner my support, any final agreement must sufficiently weaken Iran's nuclear infrastructure such that it cannot develop a weapon, and have an inspection and sanctions regime that ensures any violation of the deal's terms will be detected and punished.  This agreement meets that first, critical standard.
