Mark Your Calendars,
Santa Paws is Coming to Town

KHS is expanding its holiday events throughout the County this year. KHS is hosting holiday Santa Pet Photos on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Bay Hay & Feed on Bainbridge Island from 1-4 p.m., and on Sunday, Dec. 13 at Kitsap Humane Society's Shelter in Silverdale from 12-3 p.m. This annual fundraiser benefits the shelter's rescued animals.

Santa and local photographers Crystal Photography and Four Foot Photography will be on hand to take holiday photos of the whole family, including your pets. The cost is $20 and only digital files will be offered. The event will be on a first come, first-served basis.

Santa Pet Photos has been an annual event for over 20 years and our volunteer Santas have seen their fair share of unusual pets; including llamas, parrots, chickens and snakes. Dogs and cats are naturally the most popular.

Not a fan of photos? You and your pet don't have to miss out on the holiday cheer! KHS has two new events this year! The Pooch and Purr Parade and Pints for Pets. For more information on these events check them out on our website.

Volunteer Spotlight
Vicki Colliander
In 2013, Vicki Colliander began volunteering at Kitsap Humane Society a couple years after moving to Washington from Minnesota. She was looking for a shelter with specific values and evidence of a high standard of animal care that would be obvious even to a guest. And that's exactly what she says she found at KHS.

"After visiting KHS and talking with the volunteers in the cattery I decided to apply even though KHS is about an hour drive from our home in Lakebay," she said. " I was impressed with the work that was being done and the amount of animals being helped as well as how pleasant and welcoming the people were who took time to answer my questions."

Vicki's main duties include assisting with laundry and dishes, helping in Vet Services and serving as a Lead in the Cattery. She says her favorite time is spent with the Cattery visitors who love to tell about their pets, past and present.

"For those who have lost a pet and may not be ready for the adoption process, I believe visiting the animals and having someone to share past memories and experiences with helps the healing process. I think a good experience and a friendly volunteer willing to take time and listen will be remembered when they are ready to adopt and hope they will return to KHS," she said.

Retired from Bremer Financial after 31 years in Loss Prevention and Fraud Detection, when Vicki's not at KHS, she's spending time with her husband, Mel, and their two cats, Fred and Wilma, who they adopted from a Minnesota shelter. The couple also has two grown daughters.
Adorable Adoptable
Hershey Wants to be
Home  for the Holidays
Hi, my name is Hershey (Intake #33648) and if you're looking for a dedicated lap dog, then I'm your guy! I may be funny looking with big ears, a plump body and a long skinny tail, but shelter staff and volunteers love me regardless. I love to spend all day on your lap and I love to play with my toys. For such a little dog, I have a big personality. I can be nervous with new people and in new situations, but I bond quickly and love "my" people. I don't like to share my food with new people and I'll mark in a new house until I get on a routine. I'm looking for an adult-only home that is committed to working with my personality and challenges. I'm currently hanging out in a staff member's office, so ask the front desk if you're interested in me. You can meet me and other adoptable animals at Kitsap Humane Society, open six days a week.
