Reno is fortunate to have the world-class Nevada Museum of Art. This community asset brings some of the world's
most outstanding art right here to Reno.
Nevada art museum building $5.5 Million sky room.
In 2000, Phoenix-based architect Will Bruder visited Reno to begin project plans for the Nevada Museum of Art.
On his way to the site of the new museum, he saw a majestic old brick hotel with an eye-catching glass enclosure
at the top. He asked the driver what the building was and learned that it was the Mapes Hotel, topped with the
famous sky room. The same year, the building was imploded.
Bruder never forgot the glass room at the top.
Fast forward a decade and a half, the architect is resurrecting the glass room, but it will be a modern nod to
the sky room of the Mapes Hotel. Except, this time it will be atop the Nevada Museum of Art, just blocks from
where the Mapes Hotel used to stand.
"The idea of making it from open to closed is just a dream come true," Bruder said.
The expansion is paid for by private donors, and the sky room is scheduled to open by Feb. 1, 2016. "We're going to give the casino ballrooms a run for their money," said David Walker, executive director of the museum. The 4,800-square foot sky room will include a banquet kitchen and retractable floor-to-ceiling glass walls that allow for the creation of an open-air environment. The sky room will have the capacity to seat 250 attendees for formal dinners, and up to 397 for concerts, parties, lectures, conferences, workshops and programs for children and other special events. The room will be surrounded by a wrap-around patio space so that people can choose to enjoy the sightseeing from either inside or outside. The Museum is located at 160 West Liberty Street in downtown Reno. Nevada Museum of Art
