EXHIBIT EXTENDED THROUGH DECEMBER 10

DEC. 3 LAST DAY TO ENTER HAIKU CONTEST DURING JAPANESE ART EXHIBITION

Would you like to win
A little spending money?
Enter this contest.

The Wallace State English Department in conjunction with Sigma Kappa Delta and The Lion's Den Writing Club, in celebration of the Burrow Museum's exhibition of historic Japanese woodblock prints on loan from the Georgia Museum of Art, will sponsor a Haiku Poetry Contest from October 15 to December 3, 2015.

Haiku is a descriptive form of poetry originating in Japan. While the subject of Haiku can be about any matter, it typically discusses subjects from the natural world, such as seasons, months, animals, insects or any other element of nature.

There are no specific rules for writing a haiku; however the structure of a haiku is always the same, including the following features:
  • Only three lines, totaling 17 syllable
  • The first line is only 5 syllables
  • The second line is 7 syllables
  • The third line is 5 syllables
  • Punctuation and capitalization rules are up to the poet and need not follow rigid rules used in structuring sentences
  • Haiku does not have to rhyme; in fact, many times it does not rhyme at all.
Entries for the contest should be received no later than Dec. 3, 2015. Entries received after that deadline will not be accepted. The contest is open to all Wallace State students and the public. Each contestant is limited to three unpublished haiku, not submitted for publication to any other contest.

Submit each entry on three separate 3-by-5 inch cards, two with the the haiku only (anonymous judging), and the third with the haiku and the author's name, address, phone number and/or email address in the upper left-hand corner. Please designate as "haiku." Haiku not meeting all of these requirements will not be accepted. Please type or write legibly. Failure to follow this format may result in disqualification.

Submit entries to Jen Hays, English Department, P.O. Box 2000, Hanceville, AL, 35077.

Awards include $150 for first prize, $100 for second prize, and $50 for third prize. The winning haiku will be published on the Wallace State website and in other appropriate WSCC publications.

For more information, call 256.352.8219.

WSCC 50TH ANNIVERSARY
DID YOU KNOW?

Wallace State Community College is comprised of many alumni who chose to return to their alma mater to teach and serve students.

One of them is Stacey Hooper Brunner. Brunner is a psychology instructor at Wallace State, as well as chair of the Diversity Committee. Brunner attended Wallace State in the 1980s, earning her degree in business management. She returned several years later as staff before taking on a teaching role.
Some of her first duties on staff included sponsoring the Wallace State Cheerleading squad, after having served as head cheerleader during her student days. As a student, she also served on the Student Government Association and was a work study for the Flight Technology program.

As an employee, Brunner said she's worked all over campus and has watched the college grow and change. Her first job was as a receptionist for the Wallace State Talent Search. She also coached the dance line, taught aerobics and did some student recruiting. She continued her education at the same time, earning her master's degree in psychology and started teaching psychology.
