IMPACT 2-1-1 a pilot site

for national pandemic

preparedness initiative

IMPACT 2-1-1 is the central access point for people seeking information and assistance; not only during a personal crisis, but also during community disasters. Although community-wide emergencies occur less frequently, the 2-1-1 system plays a key role in a coordinated response.

Collaborating with Emergency Management Services, we can ramp up quickly to disseminate accurate information clearly and consistently, while also collecting data helpful for local, state and national agencies in the process of managing the disaster.

We also have the advantage of being networked across the United States with other 2-1-1s. During the massive flooding in Milwaukee in 2010, we called on other 2-1-1s to back us up; and we have backed up other 2-1-1s during hurricanes, for example. It's a system-wide approach in which all communities benefit.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and United Way Worldwide 2-1-1 have partnered to develop a coordinated national network of triage lines for use during a severe pandemic. IMPACT 2-1-1 has been selected as a pilot site for Flu On CallTM and will work collaboratively with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Milwaukee Health Department, the Wisconsin Poison Control Center, local United Way organizations and other Wisconsin 2-1-1 call centers to ensure that residents can access information and referral in the event of a pandemic.

On September 8, we will participate in a Flu On CallTM pilot exercise to test the system's functionality. This follows a recent site visit in which the national partners toured our state-of-the-art call center and provided a detailed overview of the roles of IMPACT 2-1-1 and other statewide agencies in Flu On CallTM

2-1-1 facilitates
new food pantry referral process

Racine County residents seeking emergency food can now simply dial 2-1-1 for a pantry referral as part of a new, more efficient method of service delivery coordinated by the Racine County Food Bank. The process assures that people are directed to a food pantry that is prepared to provide individuals and families with a three-day supply of well-balanced food.

"Pantries aren't overtaxed this way and they know how many people to expect," explained Bob Waite, program director of IMPACT 2-1-1. "Likewise, if there are providers in the community who let us know that they are being underutilized, we can direct more people their way."

Due to a limited supply of food resources in the community, pantry referrals are limited to one per month, per household. However, the community resource specialists at IMPACT 2-1-1 can help people identify underlying issues that may be contributing to or resulting from the food crisis. Often, callers seeking a food referral receive referrals to other family, health and social service programs in the community.

IMPACT 2-1-1 has been receiving approximately 400 referral requests per month. Key partners include United Way of Racine County, the Racine County Food Bank and Racine County food pantries.

  "Trust Us" transit campaign

Waukesha County transit busses are carrying the message "Trust Us. If you believe a child or adult is being abused or neglected, help is here. Simply dial 2-1-1" in an effort to encourage residents to report their concerns to Waukesha County protective services. IMPACT 2-1-1 community resource specialists have received specialized training to handle these sensitive calls which are then transferred to the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services. This transit ad, as well as another which encourages those experiencing a mental health crisis to get connected to support and resources by dialing 2-1-1, were produced in partnership with Waukesha County.

Brewers Community Foundation funds 2-1-1 upgrades

With generous support from the  Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation, IMPACT 2-1-1 has expanded its capacity to connect residents of Southeastern Wisconsin to information and assistance through a call center redesign, technology upgrades and an improved training center we now affectionately refer to as "The Bullpen."
