Konzert und Kunstschau
On Thursday, May 21, GISC held a Frühjahrskonzert und  Kunstschau (Spring Concert and Exhibition) featuring choral and instrumental music performances and an art exhibition by GISC students and faculty. The Kindergarten-4th Grade chorus performed selections in English and German, and several students taking private and group music lessons at GISC performed individual pieces. During the Art Show afterwards, students explained content and techniques of their art pieces and sold pieces to the audience.
Presentation about Music
On Monday, June 1, long-time faculty member and musician David Ben-Porat held music seminars with several of the classes, sharing his knowledge of music and giving students the opportunity to try playing a trombone.
TerraNova Testing
The week of June 8-12, GISC third and fourth graders participated in TerraNova testing. TerraNova is a national achievement test used in many private schools. GISC students took the TerraNova Survey test, which includes reading, language, mathematics, science, and social studies tests.
GISC Booth at Ribfest Chicago Festival
GISC was among several organizations with a booth at the Kids Square at Northcenter's 17th annual Ribfest on June 13-14. GISC parents staffed the booth and gave out hundreds of balloons -- plus lots of GISC brochures -- while answering questions about the school.
Appreciation Assembly for Frau Dr. Harnischfeger
A surprise appreciation assembly was held on Wednesday, June 17 for retiring GISC School Director Frau Dr. Annegret Harnischfeger. Each of the classes prepared a special song, poem, or performance for her, and Assistant Director Petra Obritzberger presented her with a travel journal and a special book of memories created by the GISC students. Frau Dr. Harnischfeger has been the School Director since fall 2010, and we are very appreciative of all she has done for GISC!

End of Year Thanks
German International School Chicago's last day of school for the 2014-2015 school year is Friday, June 19. We would like to thank all those who have supported GISC this school year -- our incredible teachers and staff, our Board of Trustees, our GISC families, GISC supporters, and especially, our retiring School Director, Frau Dr. Annegret Harnischfeger. It has been a fantastic year!

We look forward to seeing all new and returning GISC families at our Welcome Back to School Party on Sunday, August 23 from 3:00-5:00 pm at GISC. The first day of school will be Tuesday, August 25.
Have a Wonderful Summer!

Upcoming GISC Events

June 29 - August 7
Lycée Français de Chicago
1929 West Wilson Ave (new location!), Chicago 60640

GISC is happy to partner with the Lycée Français once again to offer German Immersion Summer Camp at the Lycée.  Camp activities include sports, games, crafts, music, and field trips. There are two weekly field trips: one to the beach and one to various places around Chicago such as a water park, the zoo, and a bowling alley.

The Lycée also runs camps in French, Mandarin Chinese, and Arabic, so the camp program (called "World Camps") has an international focus, and children from different camps are encouraged to interact with one another. Although the camp is meant to be fun and play-based, our teachers will incorporate grammar and vocabulary-building strategies into activities so that the children will be improving their German as they play.

The camp will run for three two-week sessions from June 29 - August 7, 2015, five days a week, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. World Camp participants will be the first students to experience the new Lycee Français de Chicago at 1929 West Wilson Ave. Opening in June 2015, the new campus will span 3.8 acres and includes a full-size soccer field, two playgrounds, four science labs, a large gymnasium, two art rooms, a music room and 41 classrooms. The children will be divided into two groups, ages 3-5 ("Die Forscher") and ages 6-10 ("Die Abenteuerer").

2015 Dates (in 2-week blocks):

  • June 29 - July 10, 2015
  • July 13 - July 24, 2015
  • July 27 - August 7, 2015

Families can sign up for one, two, or all three 2-week blocks.

Tuition is $795 per two week session and includes a t-shirt, snacks, daily Green Monkey catered lunch and all field trip expenses. There is also before and after camp care available from 8:00-9:00 am and 3:00-5:30 pm for an additional charge.
