Message from the CEO
As 2015 comes to an end, Skills/Compétences Canada's (SCC) staff is continuing their planning and preparations for the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC), which will be held in Moncton, New Brunswick from June 5-8, 2016. The National Secretariat is working closely with Skills Canada New Brunswick to ensure this competition is a success! This year's SCNC will be a qualifying year to compete at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.
Skills/Compétences Canada's thirteen Provincial/Territorial Member Organizations are currently getting ready for their provincial/territorial competitions.

Sherry Holmes from the TV Series "Holmes Makes it Right" Launched the Eleventh Annual National Skilled Trades and Technology Week
Skills/Compétences Canada launched its eleventh annual National Skilled Trades and Technology Week (NSTTW) to create awareness for students and educators of the incredible career opportunities available in skilled trades and technologies across Canada.
New Brunswick Community College, Moncton campus, hosted the launch event on November 3rd. The day started off with a VIP breakfast sponsored by TransCanada where over 120 industry, education, government and labour stakeholders were in attendance. The breakfast was followed by an official launch event. Students from Moncton area schools participated in interactive Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities presented by educators and SCC partners such as UA, TransCanada, Stanley/Black & Decker, New Brunswick Community College, Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick and many more.
Sherry Holmes from the TV series "Holmes Makes it Right" officially launched the event with a brief Try-A-Trade® and Technology activity amongst dignitaries that were in attendance. The Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities that were hosted during this event included welding, steamfitter-pipefitter, aesthetics, cooking, video programming and development just to name a few. Skills/Compétences Canada also took the opportunity to highlight the fact that the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition will be hosted in Moncton from June 5-8, 2016.

The launch event included a soldering challenge between Kevin Maloney from TransCanada, John Oates from Skills Canada, Sherry Holmes from the TV series 'Holmes Makes It Right' and Jenica Branscombe, a Skills Canada alumni.
|
A sub-theme of the event was the importance of oral communication (one of the nine Essential Skills) as it refers to many forms of verbal skills fundamental to entering the skilled trades and technology careers. Oral communication skills include listening, speaking, interacting, participating and presenting information.
During the week, our provincial/territorial offices across the country also hosted a series of events promoting skilled trades and technology activities in Canada.

Skills/Compétences Canada Welcomes New Executive Committee Members
During the Board of Directors meeting, held on October 23rd, 2015, in Moncton, New Brunswick, new members of the Executive Committee were elected. Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) is pleased to welcome Lisa Frizzell as Board Secretary and Peter Lawlor as Treasurer. Lisa and Peter join previously elected Executive Committee members John Oates - President, Josh Silver - Vice President and Donavon Elliott - Past President.

Mark your Calendar - 2016 Skills Canada National Competition!
The countdown is on for the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition, which will take place June 5-8, 2016, at Moncton Coliseum, in the beautiful city of Moncton, New Brunswick.
The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Every year, more than 500 young people from all regions of Canada come to SCNC to participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology contests.
By providing a forum where Canadian youth can compete against each other at the national level, SCNC provides hands-on experience related to skilled trades and technology careers. Through these competitions, Skills/Compétences Canada also seeks to raise the awareness of the skilled trades and technology sectors to Canadian youth and their influencers.
As always, admission to the Competition is free and it's open to the public.

This competition is the first step in the qualification process to represent Canada
at the 44th WorldSkills Competition, which will take place in Abu Dhabi, from October 14-19, 2017.
Every two years, competitors from the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) are invited to participate in the WorldSkills Canadian Trials. Successful participants from the WorldSkills Canadian Trials will make up Team Canada and will compete at the WorldSkills Competition, against the best in the world! The WorldSkills Competition has come to symbolize the pinnacle of excellence in vocational training.

Winnipeg Set to Host 2017 Skills Canada National Competition
On November 4th, during an event held at Red River College, it was announced that Winnipeg will be the host of the 2017 Skills Canada National Competition. This event is scheduled to take place from May 31 to June 3, 2017, at the RBC Convention Centre in downtown Winnipeg.
Mr. Kevin Chief, Minister of Jobs and the Economy for the government of Manitoba helped make this announcement during National Skilled Trades and Technology Week. The provincial government of Manitoba, the Government of Canada and many other partners will be working with SCC to make SCNC 2017 a huge success.
More than 500 youth participants and several thousand visitors are expected to be at the RBC Convention Centre during this event. The participating students will test their skills against exacting standards in more than 40 skilled trades and technology skills areas.

WorldSkills General Assembly Niagara Falls 2016
Skills USA and Skills/Compétences Canada will be hosting the 2016 WorldSkills General Assembly on October 1-7, 2016, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Several meetings and special events will be held over the course of this event.

Pipe Trades Apprenticeships - A Technological Future
Many people are now considering completing an Apprenticeship in the pipe trades instead of going to University for an academic career. If you see what is happening in construction now and in the near future, you will know that it is a continuously evolving field making it important to upgrade your technical skills to keep up. If you take the time to research Smart Cities and how they are built you will see what we mean. Here are some of the new technologies out there now that are currently being used in construction.
500 new Smart Cities will be built in the next 20 years including current projects in: Singapore - GuangZhou Knowledge City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Sydney Science Park and Southeast Asia Melaka Gateway.
These Smart Cities Alliances are fairly new to the construction industry and will require tradespeople to work with many of the following systems:
Building Information Modelling (BIM):
- This system includes virtual walkthroughs, flythroughs and mockups.
- This allows you to see the completed work before you even start it.

Internet 2.0/3.0:
- This system represents the gamification of construction.
- It is essentially a virtual or augmented reality.

- Check this out with "machine to machine" communication. Machines are making decisions based on your needs, not on what you input with a keyboard or a mouse.

Google Project Tango:
- Check this out as this machine actually is almost "self aware" and autonomous based on sensors and fuzzy logic.

Minecraft Construction:
- This represents a new way to build things.

Drones for Construction:
- This is where these technologies will come together with the worker.

Other new technologies being used are:
- Mobile Offices/Integrating Apps into Workflow
- Cloud Based Communications
- Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)
- Digital DNA/Data Stewardship
The following advanced technologies will also be incorporated in the Smart Cities:
- Autonomous (self driving) taxis and high speed rail
- Direct current cities, free power with no AC current
- Solar powered free power for all devices and data transmission
- Piezoelectric /wireless charging cities with no power requirements
- Software autonomous (self directed) operational systems for an entire city
(ie: Skynet)
We are seeing sweeping technological advances take place in the construction industry with more to come. This will in no way diminish the role of the construction apprentices in many of the trades at the forefront of these converging technologies. The ongoing trend towards automation (such as robots and drones) will not eliminate the need for people to work with tools, apply technologies and get the work done. In fact the setup, balancing and troubleshooting of these new systems will require a new breed of apprentice who wants to be a part of this exciting transition. Our new workforce will truly be different from the past but will still require the adaptation skills that were learned in Apprenticeships 20 years ago. The need for Apprentices to be on the forefront of the pipe trades will be increasing every year!
