Holiday Discounts and Gift Ideas from Cumulus Soaring, Inc.

Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays to you and your family from Paul and Dena at Cumulus Soaring, Inc.  We hope your holiday season is joyous.

I am extremely thankful for a great year of soaring.  Dick Andrews and I won the last contest day at the Region 7 Soaring Contest in Albert Lea, Minnesota in our DG-1000.  That was the first time either of us won a soaring contest day.  It was a very challenging day, and we were extremely lucky, but I'll take it!  Dick and I also enjoyed many great soaring days flying from Nephi, Utah in late June and early July.  Our best flight was over 800 km (OLC distance).  It was our longest flight to date.  I found free distance OLC flights to be extremely fun!  I very highly recommend flying from Nephi.  The volunteers put on a great soaring event and the soaring weather and scenery were awesome!   It was a great adventure.  You can see some photos from the trip on my Flickr page.

It has also been a good year from Cumulus Soaring, Inc.  I am extremely thankful for the support received from the soaring community.  Thank you for your business.  Thank you especially to those who purchased Mutual Support Memberships.  I very much enjoy serving the soaring community and look forward to continuing to do so for many more years.

Good Soaring,

Paul Remde

New - Mountain High EDS O2D1-2G and O2D2-2G

Mountain High Oxygen is pleased to announce the release of our next generation of EDS (Electronic Delivery System) Pulse Demand oxygen controllers, the O2D1-2G and O2D2-2G.

These changes are common to both the O2D1 and O2D2 family of EDS.

Our new Pulse Demand systems still incorporate all of the benefits of our legacy controllers but with many improvements.

We started with the control switch: The EDS unit now incorporates a MIL spec ruggedized easy-to- grip rotary control switch providing improved reliability, increased ease of function and visibility. This switch also has very positive position detents for excellent tactile feedback making it resistant to changes from causal rubbing or bumping.

While we were at it, we improved the manifold design to allow for better breathing response and effort tracking. This combined with a new circuit board, as well as a new micro-controller, gives improved power-conserving operations with even less RFI emissions, better respire-metric tracking and dispensing of oxygen in finer resolution resulting in smoother steps from altitude and breathing changes.

Other improvements include a dedicated bi-color system battery status light allowing much easier monitoring and definitive indication of battery condition without being confused as a station operation. The original O2Dx units encoded the low battery notification into the station lights. This status light also responds to each control switch change with a beep and green flash to confirm your actions. Also the audio alerts and warnings are louder, more crisp and dynamic to human hearing in an effort of being heard over modest cabin noise. The O2D2 has a 600 Ohm stereo external audio jack as well as a USB compatible (5VDC) external power port.

More intuitive F-Mode settings labeled as 1, 2, 3 & 4 for use with face masks or when more oxygen is required.

Abandoned Unit Auto Shut-Off
If you should forget to turn your EDS off after use, it will now go into auto shut-down (drawing very little power) after 3 hours of detecting no use in an attempt to save the batteries for another flight.

Thommen Mechanical Aircraft Clocks

Thommen Aircraft Equipment AG (formerly Revue Thommen) makes high quality aircraft instruments in Switzerland. Their B13 and B18 mechanical aircraft chronographs are classic, handsome time instruments. If you are a fan of mechanical watches, you'll love these clocks. They have mechanical (no electricity required) movements which are wound by hand and run for 8 days. They are designed to be mounted in a 57 mm instrument hole (with some modification) and offer several timer features. They are legal for use in aircraft, but also look great sitting on a desk or table. They are great conversation pieces. Like a fine watch, they are not inexpensive, but this is sure to be the one instrument you move from sailplane to sailplane over the years.

An overview video is now available to help you see just how great these clocks really are.

New Book - LS-Sailplanes - From the LS1 to LS11

Overview
This book documents the history of the famous Rolladen Schneider LS Sailplanes. It includes many photographs and other documents. For every LS sailplane type there is a lovely full-page 3-view drawing by Martin Simons. The book is supplied with a 16 page Englsih summary insert in which the most important facts are translated chapter by chapter.

Review by Paul Remde
I'm an engineer/MBA who loves
reading about the development of sailplanes and the people who brought them to life. I wish I could read German so I could savor every word, but I was very satisfied with the 16 page English language summary, the line-art sailplane drawings by Martin Simons, and the many photographs. Certainly the LS sailplanes are some of the most lovely sailplanes ever made. Their many innovative design features not only worked great, but also looked great - from the gracefully bent-up winglet featured on the cover, to the way the back end of the tailboom was designed to allow air to escape the fuselage - improving cockpit ventilation. The book is expertly published by Klaus Fey of EQIP - maker of the fantastic "Sailplanes" books. Everyone who loves the lines of LS sailplanes will love this book.

Cloudstreet - Soaring the American West (DVD & Blu-ray)

CloudStreet: Soaring The American West is a visually stunning high-definition documentary featuring the beauty and drama of a soaring adventure in the American West. As unbelievably serene as it is thrilling,

CloudStreet gives viewers the extraordinary experience of soaring along the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming.

Along the way, CloudStreet educates our audience not just about flying sailplanes cross-country, but also about the science of soaring, about the unique geography of the intermountain west, and about the workings of our atmosphere. It is easy learning as the audience is carried along by the excitement of this experience and drawn in by the natural curiosity evoked from this extraordinary mode of flight.

We hear from the pilots about how it feels to cross vast distances using only the energy of the atmosphere to stay aloft. Their love of soaring is inspirational as they balance managing the dangers of motorless flight, and the joys of true freedom.
Cloudstreet uses newly developed camera platforms and state-of-the-art high-definition camera technology for an unparalleled experience.

LXNAV Wi-Fi Module for LX80x0 and LX90x0

The LXNAV Wi-Fi Module can be used to connect to the internet through a wireless network such as a smart phone that can act as a "Personal Hotspot". It offers many powerful features - such as the ability to e-mail your flight log to any computer while still sitting in the glider. It can also be used to download and display weather data on the map (coming soon).

It will be extremely nice to e-mail my flight log to my home computer immediately after landing - using my iPhone (any smart phone with internet access will work) to connect the LX9000 to the internet. Displaying weather maps on the map will also be extremely useful - assuming my iPhone can connect to the internet while at altitude.
