St. Pete, we have a Pier!

On Thursday, St. Petersburg City Council approved an architectural and engineering services agreement with the designers of the new pier. During the meeting, $5.2 million was approved which will be spent on finalized design, demolition of the current Pier and approach and initial contracting services.

The schematic design phase is scheduled to take five months and will include feedback from residents. Following the design refinement, the community will be engaged to learn about the concept as the city moves forward on the final design, permitting and ultimately, construction.

Said Mayor Rick Kriseman: "Today, the Sunshine City took the final step in securing the future of the St. Petersburg Pier, and our treasured waterfront, for generations to come. The process we implemented more than a year ago has served our city well. The citizens who participated in our public process, as well as Pier Working Group and Selection Committee Members, are to be commended for their service. Our waterfront park system is the crown jewel of the City of St. Petersburg. I thank the St. Petersburg City Council for sharing that vision and their leadership."

Creative Loafing Tampa: St. Pete's Plan to NOT Jail Teens Appears to Work

Who would have thought not treating a 13-year-old, first-time offender like a hardened criminal would help the kid make better choices?

In St. Pete, early statistics - released yesterday morning by the mayor's office - show that doing just that works. Apparently if you don't put a young teenager in jail with older, more seasoned teen criminals, those kids don't learn how to turn a single bad decision into a life of crime. Instead, a good portion of St. Pete's recently misdirected youths are taking their second chance and running with it.

Tampa Bay Times: Editorial: Pushing ahead with Pier Park

Mayor Rick Kriseman will ask the City Council on Thursday to approve design and construction contracts for St. Petersburg's new municipal pier, as well as a demolition contract for the old inverted pyramid. Over the next three years, city officials must keep costs within the $33 million construction budget and make sure that Pier Park's innovative design unfolds as promised. But for now, it's gratifying to see that the Pier Park concept continues to draw broad community support and is progressing along a steady path toward becoming St. Petersburg's next waterfront jewel.

the first being south of Central near USF St. Petersburg's campus.
