BETTYRemembering Sister Betty Brucker, FSM

Sister Betty Brucker, who served for 16 years as head of SSM St. Mary's Heath Center in Richmond Heights and helped found DOORWAYS, died June 30 at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. She was 90 and a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary for more than 70 years.

Her long, illustrious career always reflected her deep love for God and all creatures, "I loved the people with whom I worked," she said. "I tried to instill in them compassionate care for the patients and each other."

TeamDoorwaysPicJumpstart Program Offers Much Needed Support

Several years ago a young lady came to DOORWAYS in need of help. She just found out she had contracted HIV from her boyfriend. She explained to us that she had moved out and away from her boyfriend. She was homeless and in need of a place for she and her son to live. We enrolled her in our Jumpstart Program and connected her to counseling to help her deal with depression she felt, as she was overwhelmed with her diagnosis. This young lady quickly became accustom to working with us and accepted support in all facets of her life. It wasn't long before she received the news that her boyfriend had committed suicide. This left her yet another stress to carry. We continued to connect her to counseling specific to her needs and she increasingly became more accepting of her new life.

With the support of DOORWAYS, this young lady was able to move from homelessness into her own apartment. Today she is progressing through her college courses and her son is excelling in school. She has maintained housing stability for over six years!     For more information on our Jumpstart Program click here.

Nearly 90 guests attended the annual Keystone Society donor recognition event hosted by Keystone Society Co-Chairs Christine and Rick Pennell at the elegant Bellerive Country Club. DOORWAYS President and CEO Opal M. Jones delivered a brief "State of DOORWAYS" and Board Chair Diane Levine welcomed and thanked the many donors in attendance. Board member and Development Committee Chair Ron Jagels thanked the Pennells for their many years of service and introduced the new Keystone Society leadership, Carol and Tom Voss, Ed Giganti, and Kathie and Richard Winter.

A poignant quote from Ron Jagels, "When you consider DOORWAYS' budget, please remember that the Federal, State and local government grants provide the restricted funding for housing and health, but it is the individual gifts from the Keystone Society members that provide the hope."
VolunteerFairVolunteer Fair

Our Volunteer Program held it's inaugural Volunteer Fair at the Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis on June 30. The fair featured a "speed dating" theme where prospective volunteers "dated" representatives from DOORWAYS, Center for Women in Transition and Humanitri for a volunteer best fit.

As a surprise to us, a resident from our Residential Program attended searching for ways to volunteer! Combine that with great food and a welcoming space - and we had ourselves a hit.

Members of TEAM DOORWAYS participated in the 6th Annual Pride 5K presented by St. Louis Frontrunners during Pride Weekend. For nearly 30 years, St. Louis Frontrunners has sought to provide an outlet where Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Straight-Allied individuals could come together under the goal of a healthy lifestyle through running and walking, regardless of physical ability.  A portion of the proceeds from this year's event will be used to support DOORWAYS and the work we do in the community. Thank you St. Louis Frontrunners for your support!
