My June project was to do something for the 4th of July parade in Patagonia. The art center gave me the topic of jungle and I decided to base it on the work of Henri Rousseau. It was a month of making at least 20 costumes: parrots, jaguars, snakes, monkeys, frogs, a vulture, a wild woman and a snake charmer. Great fun. To see me working the wings of a giant hummingbird puppet, here's a link to the picture that was on the front page of the local paper:

 https://twitter.com/nogalesnews/status/618810485442359296/photo/1

Now you can see the size of the bird and its wingspan.

Bobbie's Notes

What a wonderful reception we had for the PaperWorks exhibit opening at the Poetry Center in June. All the hard work of the Exhibits Committee, chaired by Anita Rankin, resulted in a very successful show. Stop by the Poetry Center in the next two weeks, if you haven't yet seen this fine display. Enjoy Anita's photos below.

After-meeting Salons and Creative Circles

Will you think about the opportunity that comes around on meeting day each month? The East Gallery of St. Philips is rented from 9am to 1pm on meeting days, (second Thurs., Sept. through May).   We have also reserved the room from 1-3pm for the use of PaperWorks members, but you must contact Bobbie Wilson wilsonbobbie@hotmail.com by the Monday (Sept. 7) before the meeting (Sept. 10) if your group wishes to use the space. This is a great opportunity for Creative Circle members to gather, to hold a free salon, or to meet with other members. What ideas do you have for the space?

Workshops
Offered by PaperWorks Members

Mary Ellen Palmeri

Mary Ellen is the moderator of Origami LAFF, a fun-loving paper-folding club that meets monthly at the Nanini branch library. Meetings are free, open to the public and usually held on the 3rd Sunday each month from 1-4pm. For more information contact Mary Ellen: maryellen4462@yahoo.com Next meeting is Sunday, Aug. 16.

Special note:

Mary Ellen's Origami LAFF group and friends recently folded 1,059 cranes for the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, whose goal is to fold 70,000 paper cranes for peace to be brought to Los Alamos National Laboratory this month, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Paper crane symbolism began with Sadako Sasaki, a toddler victim of Hiroshima who died in 1955. In her last year of life, she folded 1,300 paper cranes as a prayer for healing. Thereafter, paper cranes became an international symbol of peace, and on Aug. 6-9, at Los Alamos, cranes from Mary Ellen's LAFF group join others at a National Conference on Nonviolence. Then the cranes will fly to Japan and elsewhere around the globe. For more:
