The Incredible Flying Bowling Ball
By: Greg Martin
Medical Services Volunteer
The Great Horned Owl is essentially a bowling ball with night-vision goggles and the ability to fly, a bowling ball that considers most of God's little creatures to be pins. Like bowling balls, or at least bowling alleys, the Great Horned Owl can be found all across North America, practically everywhere you look. Like bowling balls, they are built solid and built tough; they can weigh anywhere between two and five pounds, which may not sound like much to us mammals, but in the raptor world, anything at five pounds that's not an eagle is a veritable monster.

Monarch Butterfly:
More than just a pretty face
After the Wildfire...
By: Gail Cochrane
Liberty Wildlife Volunteer
The gaudy orange and black butterflies fluttering around nectar plants in our gardens appear so insubstantial, so frivolous, that it's hard to imagine the drama and complexity of their life journeys.  The story of the monarch butterfly is an annual enactment of miraculous transformations and epic flights to perpetuate the survival of the species.

Fire is one of our greatest tools and one of our most destructive forces.  Fire that is low in intensity and does not grow out of control benefits our wildlands and is actually vital to the survival of several species and the overall ecological health of forests and grasslands.   Despite the damage that can occur to property and people, good things can come out of forest fires.
