Ghost

Even human beings, arguably the most enlightened of the Earth's creatures, are afraid of the dark. It's a primal response, a sort of collective instinctual memory going back to the very beginning of our species. Darkness is terrifying, because what we can't see, we very naturally fear. Yet many animals in Arizona choose, or in many cases are forced, to brave the night in lieu of the day in order to escape the often-oppressive heat. But at least in daylight, you can usually see the monster bearing down on you. In the desert at night, your other senses become far more key.

Beavers in Arizona?

Just before daybreak, bats and nighthawks patrol for bugs rising off the grass on the wide playfields of the local middle school.   The bats zigzag through the sky like out of control kites, darting erratically after their flying insect prey.  It's hard for me to stay focused on a single bat in flight.

Here in the Valley area, the odds of seeing a beaver in the Verde River, Salt River and even Tempe Town Lake are surprisingly quite good.  At one time, beavers were found nearly everywhere in Arizona where there was permanent water.  Their populations declined dramatically with early heavy trapping as well as pioneer settlements and resultant habitat loss.
