Making the Rounds with Founding Dean Barbara Atkinson
Friends and Colleagues,
I'm feeling extremely grateful for the tremendous progress we have made toward our accreditation. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Co-Secretary and Senior Director, Accreditation Services, Dan Hunt, MD, and Assistant LCME Co-Secretary and Senior Director, LCME Surveys and Team Training, Donna Waechter, PhD were on campus last week. They met with our faculty, UNLV leadership and some of the University of Nevada School of Medicine faculty and department chairs and reviewed our 34-page self-study. The self-study summarizes our entire medical school program. Drs. Hunt and Waechter provided our team with excellent feedback and suggestions to consider before we submit our final accreditation documents to the LCME - the nationally accrediting body for medical schools. In addition to the self-study, we are submitting the data collection instrument (DCI) totaling 274 pages, and a large appendix bringing the entire set of documents up to 475 pages on December 1.
LCME meets and reviews our submission at their February 2016 meeting and decides if we get a site visit
If we are granted a site visit our status goes from "Applicant School to Candidate status"
LCME conducts a site visit in late Spring
LCME meets in October 2016 and reviews the site visit report and determines if we can start recruiting students. If we get the green light to recruit students our status goes from "Candidate to Preliminary Accreditation"
I'm extremely thankful for all the people who are working so hard to ensure our success, and for all of you - our amazing supporters. We have made a lot of progress toward making UNLV School of Medicine a reality by 2017. I couldn't be more excited.

Community Advisory Board Spotlight
Dr. Robert McBeath is President and CEO of Southwest Medical Associates (SMA) where he oversees SMA's 22 medical health care centers; including six urgent care centers, five convenient cares and two lifestyle centers catering to older adults. He is also founder and President of Urology Specialists of Nevada. Dr. McBeath obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. "As a 'home-grown' doctor in Southern Nevada, improving access to health care for our residents and strengthening the quality of care in our community is very important to me personally. It will be life-changing for individuals and the region as a whole," said McBeath. "In my view, UNLV School of Medicine is vital to the health of our state and our residents. It will be a major economic and community development engine, and my work on the community advisory board is in support of that vision."
