Up to 90% of seniors want to age in place - meaning they do not want to enter into assisted living or nursing home facilities. Rather, most adults want to stay in their homes and communities where they have lived their lives. This appears to be working for many seniors, but some may have more difficulty navigating this aging strategy - leaving them homebound with few social or stimulating outings.
Unfortunately, the facts about elder abuse are not fully known. There has not been enough research done to create a comprehensive understanding of what little data has been collected. Most data has been done in specific areas on the individual state level and not officially combined.
Much like Women's Health Month in May, Men's Health Month is observed during the month of June with the week before Father's Day designated as National Men's Health Week- June 15-21, 2015. Many communities coordinate activities to increase awareness of preventable problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men as well as boys.
Thieves never rest and they are quite clever. Now, it seems they are also getting more daring. In the past for elderly people living at home, there have been worries about someone calling the house and somehow getting personal and financial information to steal by pretending to be a relative in need of help. But, today, it looks like they are also showing up at the door.
A few years ago, it was not uncommon to find up to 25% of nursing home dementia-diagnosed residents taking heavy anti-psychotic tranquilizers. People with dementia can act out in loud, aggressive or "hard-to-manage" ways and so it is not surprising that medications would be used to make it easier for staff in a busy facility. While some patients probably do need the medications to avoid harming themselves or others, it was starting to be "overused."
