Amazing Tails:

Making Connections with PAWS

Archie Good
PAWS Therapy Companion

"After Aiden read to Sawyer, his family began to express how wonderful therapy dogs are for everyone. The discussion lead to how therapeutic it was when dogs visited Aiden's sister in the hospital.  The mother said the only time her little angel got any rest or ease from the constant, agonizing pain was when she spent time with the therapy dogs. She would watch her daughter relax and smile, pain-free, even if it were only for a little while.

"This little girl, not so long ago, maybe just a few weeks ago, had yet another visit to Nemours. The mother told me how Sawyer reminded her of another Golden Retriever that had recently visited her there. The little girl said this dog made her feel happy...and, as she said this to me, her eyes lit up, she continued to pet Sawyer, and she just smiled the biggest smile I think I have ever seen! Her mom said this dog was another PAWS dog. I asked if they remembered the dog's name. And sure enough, it was....Archie!

"Archie, you need to know what an exceptionally wonderfully good and loved boy you are and how happy you made this little girl and her family. You took away her pain and you gave her love, courage, support and turned a bad memory into a good one. GOOD BOY! Now, will someone please give the dog a bone!?"

Thank you Barnes & Noble Volunteers

Thank You to everyone who helped with our Barnes & Noble trifecta!  Beginning with our Book Fair in April and followed by Mother's Day and Father's Day Gift Wrapping, this partnership raised over $3,000 for the programs of PAWS for People.

But... more than just raising crucial funds to support our programs, these events raised awareness about PAWS and what we do AND  inspired over 150 people to sign up to receive our eNewsletter and/or learn more about volunteering with PAWS for People.  That is amazing!

So many people came into the store and excitedly shared with us how they knew about PAWS.  Many had experienced PAWS at Nemours (in the ER, in the cast room, in the waiting room) and shared with us how the visit with one of our loving pets had totally changed the course of their day.  Others shared reading experiences at schools and libraries.  Staff from several assisted living facilities told us how the visits were as important to the staff as they were to the residents.  Over and over, we heard how the work that you do makes a difference!

Thank You for participating at Barnes & Noble and for all that you do every day to bring joy and comfort to others.

Empowered Yoga

Every Sunday Empowered Yoga has a donation based Stationary Sequence class led by instructors who volunteer their time to teach. All proceeds go to charity with a different worthy cause or organization as the recipient each month. PAWS for People is the July recipient!

One of our High School members, Marie DeVoll, has arranged for all donations from the 3:30 pm Community Classes in the month of July to be donated to PAWS for People as one of her fundraisers for her Wag-n-Walk team.

If you are a practiced yogi or if you've been thinking about trying a class, here is your opportunity! Come out any Sunday this July to inhale, exhale, stretch and support PAWS.

Tidbit Corner: June 26th Fun!
Take Your Dog to Work Day  was created in 1996 by Pet Sitters International (PTI) in the UK to celebrate companion dogs and encourage adoptions from shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies. It was first celebrated in the  United States on June 24, 1999 and has been held the Friday after Father's Day ever since.    The day offers a summer Friday for employees to introduce their dog to co-workers. PTI hopes that dog-less co-workers will be encouraged to adopt when they witness the human-animal bond.

PAWS Shining Stars: Lyle & Hannah

Welcome to Lyle and Hannah, one of our newest therapy teams. Hannah and Lyle are pictured outside the Oblates of St. Frances de Sales just after their first visit there.  The fathers were surprised and delighted to be visited by a cat - you know there are some folks who are truly CAT people. Congratulations to Lyle and Hannah on a great start to a promising career in pet therapy!

Community Connections
PAWS Therapy Team Danna Levy & Ginger visit with two young men at Connections CSP
Danna Levy and Ginger are regular visitors to Connections CSP, one of PAWS new mental health sites located in Wilmington, DE. Danna and Ginger visit weekly to bring smiles and a sense of constancy to the lives of the folks that drop in to Connections Community Support Program which was created to support adults 18 years or older with Serious Mental Illness and Persons with Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders. PAWS now has two teams, Danna & Ginger and Carol Swanson & Cammi, that visit weekly and is hoping to supply Connections with additional teams over the summer.
