The Adventures of Flat Jesus

Flat Jesus visits with Hall Griffith, Tristan Griffith-Boyde, and Amadeus Boyde
Is your Flat Jesus planning a trip to the beach or backwaters? Is he a bit worn and fragile from going about your daily life with you? Solution at hand! Bring him to the volunteer room this coming Sunday after services and Deacon Martha will laminate him right then and there - protecting him from the elements.

Help us share the Good News that God is with us wherever we are this summer.

Annual Pledge Reminder

As summer approaches and travel plans begin to expand, we want to thank you once again for your ongoing financial support of St. Mark's mission and ministry in and around Evanston.  All of us together ensure the health and viability of our ministries.  If your summer plans involve weekend travel or if your pledge has fallen a bit behind, we want to take this moment to encourage you continue to be faithful in your giving during the Summer months.  If you will be absent, pledge payments can be mailed to the church.  You might also want to consider setting up an automatic payment through your bank.  This not only helps us with cash flow but also helps us to have a more accurate picture of our finances when we do our mid-year budget review.  Thank you again for your support.  See you in church --- or in photos posted online!

Fourth Friday Faith by the Firepit

Pastor Debra and Andrea invite you to join us in the backyard of the Rectory on the Fourth Fridays of the Month this summer. Our first gathering will be on Friday, June 26 beginning at 7 p.m. Bring a chair, bring a beverage and a snack to share.  To enter the backyard, come up the driveway from the alley and enter through the gate that says "Beware of Dog" (sounds much more ominous than it is).  From 7 - 8 p.m. we will have informal conversations about the intersection of life and faith and then, you are welcome to just hang out until you feel called to go home. Children are welcome --- but please bring something for them to play with outside if you think they might not be inclined to just sit around a fire.  Our dog Gabby will be joining us; so, we are sorry that no other pets can attend.  If it rains, we will gather inside around the fireplace (not quite the same, but it will have to do!).  We hope to see you for our first Fourth Friday Faith by the Firepit event.

Social Justice & Outreach Opportunities

St. Mark's continues its commitment to our community through its many social justice and outreach activities. Following are ways in which you can get involved with the St. Mark's community in helping to create a better world.

Third Sunday Food Drive: A Year's Worth of Jam!

On the third Sunday of each month, St. Mark's will collect non-perishable food items to be shared with local food pantries. This Sunday June 21, Interfaith Action of Evanston's Hospitality Center at St. Mark's is our recipient. They have asked us to provide them with a 3-month supply of jam. Each month they go through 4 large jars of grape jelly, 4 large jars of any other kind of jam or jelly. We would like to collect at least 12 large jars of grape jelly and 12 large jars of other jams or jellies. Please bring your jars and bottles with you to church. If at all possible, we would prefer plastic containers.  The big red shopping cart will be waiting for you at the back of the sanctuary.

Other Announcements
More Planting!
If you'd like to have a part in completing the landscape project, join Carol Martin on Saturday, June 27 between 10 and 12 to add annuals to the circle around the St Mark's sign. In the landscape plan space was left there for planting of annuals and bulbs by the congregation. If you like planting and/or have some annuals to donate contact Carol at [email protected] or at 773 / 539 - 020 6 ( w o rk: 773 / 244 - 491 8). This season the arrangement of plants will be a patchwork created by the planters. Next year we will invite a group to plan the arrangement in advance. This fall bulbs can be planted for spring bloom. If you don't have a green thumb or spare annuals but want to participate, call Carol to offer a donation towards plants.

Prayers of the People at General Convention

This year in late June the Episcopal Church's General Convention will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. As part of bringing us all together in prayer everyone is invited to add prayers in words and images to The Prayers of the People at the Episcopal Church's 78th General Convention, 2015. To learn more please visit prayersofthepeople.org and subscribe to receive emails that will ask you to write prayers on social media. A selection of the prayers received through social media will be prayed in the General Convention daily liturgy as part of the Prayers of the People.

Social Media and St. Mark's

If you have your mobile device it would be good if you put it on silent when in worship. But if anything in Sunday's service - a prayer, reading, hymn or the sermon-moves you, please feel free to tweet it or post it to Facebook #StMarkEvanston. While you're at it, "check-in" with us on Foursquare!

St. Mark's website has up-to-date information on all that's new at St. Mark's - including a current calendar of events - check it out at http://www.stmarksevanston.org. Also, we are on Facebook and Twitter! Find us at http://www.facebook.com/StMarkEvanston  and follow us @StMarkEvanston.

In The Community

God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Loving finds all of its meaning in relationship. The following are opportunities to be in relationship with one another and with the community of Evanston.

Evanston Creative Writing Meetup

If you like to write and want a supportive environment in which to write, join us! Each week, a member volunteers to provide writing prompts to spark our creativity. It can be a first line, an object, a picture, a situation. For about 10-15 minutes we write and if we feel like sharing we read our creation aloud. This is not a critique group - only positive feedback is encouraged. We usually fit in 3-4 prompts in an evening. Member ages range from young adults to octagenarians. You do not have to be a serious or professional writer to participate. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month in the Old Library at St. Mark's or Panera.  For more information go to http://www.meetup.com/Evanston-Creative-Writing-Group/

In The Diocese
March with the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago on June 28 Join the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago on Sunday, June 28 to march in Chicago's Annual GBTQ Pride Parade. With nearly 1 million people in attendance, the parade is an amazing opportunity to deliver our message of hope in Christ, of complete love and acceptance in God, and of changing the world through the Holy Spirit to a massive audience.  This year's parade is approximately 2.5 miles long, beginning at Montrose and Broadway and ending at Diversey and Sheridan. If you've never marched before, it is an amazing experience. We'll have signs, streamers, music, and even a minivan if you get too tired. All you need to do is show up -- and wear a blue t-shirt! To march with the diocese, please email Matthew Zaradich at [email protected] and put "Episcopal Pride" in the subject line. We need an accurate count of marchers, so please email as soon as possible.  If you'd like to commute in with Pastor Debra, send an e-mail to [email protected]
The Volunteer Lay Chaplain's Training Program is now accepting Applications for Enrollment in their Fall 2015 training program which will meet at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 1045 S. Arlington Heights Road, Elk Grove Village on Saturday mornings September 5 through December 5.  For more information and an application form, please see Pastor Debra.
