Celebrating National Nurses Week, May 6-12

On the occasion of National Nurses Week, we recognize and thank all nurses for their commitment to excellence and their impact on nursing education, research, and practice. We also acknowledge our nursing students, who are working diligently to earn their degrees, so they, too, can make a positive mark on the health care workforce.

125th Anniversary Year Culminates with Celebratory Gala
A spectacular gala, held April 18 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, concluded a year of special events celebrating the School of Nursing's 125th anniversary. Largest-Ever Gift of $5.2 million Gift Will Expand Enrollment in BSN Program


A gift of $5.24 million from William "Bill" and Joanne Conway, through their Bedford Falls Foundation, will enable UMSON to expand enrollment in its traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and increase opportunities for registered nurses to obtain their BSN degrees. The gift, which is the largest in UMSON's history, will provide full scholarship support for 157 new UMSON students. Click here to read more.

UMSON Signs Dual Admission Partnerships with Montgomery College and the College of Southern Maryland

UMSON recently signed agreements of dual admission with Montgomery College (MC) and the College of Southern Maryland (CSM). The agreements will bring seamless transition from MC's and CSM's associate degree programs to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at UMSON. State of the School Address Celebrates Accomplishments; Looks to the Future

Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and special guests assembled at UMSON on April 8 for Dean Jane Kirschling's first annual State of the School address. The presentation, "Academic Nursing: Maryland and Beyond," highlighted 2014 faculty, staff, and departmental successes, as well as new traditions, and culminated with a look ahead to the future. Dean Kirschling Invited to White House to Discuss Climate Change 

Dean Jane Kirschling was among leaders of nursing, public health, and medical schools who participated in a White House Roundtable, held April 9, to address climate change. The White House hosted the roundtable discussion with deans from universities around the nation who are committing to training the next generation of health professionals to address the health impacts of climate change. Click here to read more.

UMSON Students Attend NSGA Conference

BSN students Salina Sarma, Lucy Rose Davidoff, Maria Monteleone, Juliana DeBitetto, Kathryn Turner, and Stephen Rietschel represented UMSON at the National Student Nurses Association's annual conference, held in Phoenix, Ariz., in April.

BSN Graduate Honored for Academic Achievement

Katie Goldrich, a December '14 BSN graduate from the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), was honored for academic achievement at the annual USG Student Achievement and Leadership Breakfast, held April 3. The Academic Achievement Awards program recognizes one outstanding graduating senior per academic major for their excellence in academics and contributions to their academic program of study.

Ann Scanlon McGinity, PhD, MS '74, RN, FAAN , chief operating officer at Houston Methodist Global Healthcare Services, was recently inducted as a Woman of Distinction in the Texas Medical Center Women's History Project. The project documents the lives of women who have made significant contributions to the field of health care in the Texas Medical Center.

Stefanie Glenn, MS '02, BSN '00, is an active duty U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps officer serving at the forefront of the U.S. Government's Ebola Response Mission in West Africa. CDR Glenn serves as Chief of Operations for a team of specialized officers deployed to Liberia to manage and staff the Monrovia Medical Unit.

Robin Newhouse, PhD '00, MS '99, BSN '87, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, professor and chair, Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, has been named dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing, effective July 1. Click here to read more.

Ten Faculty Members Awarded Nurse Educator Doctoral Grants

Ten UMSON faculty members have been awarded the Nurse Educator Doctoral Grant for Practice and Dissertation Research. Assistant Professors Charon Burda, MS '03, PMHNP-BC; Katherine Fornili, MPH, RN, CARN; and Kelley Wilson, MSN, RN; and Clinical Instructors Ben Canha, MS '96, RN; Meredid Caves, MSN '13, RN; Dzifa Dordunoo, PhD '14, MSN, RN; Ana Duarte, MS '09, BSN '06, APRN, CRNP-PMH; Michelle Gonzalez, MSN, MSOM, RN, CRNA; Ann Hoffman, MS '11, RN; and Kathleen McElroy, MS '10, BSN '97, received awards of $30,000. Blanche Brown, DNP '15, MSN, RN, PNP, clinical instructor, recently completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Her scholarly project was titled, "Improving Asthma Management Through a School-Based Asthma Education Program."

Jeanne Geiger-Brown, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate professor, made the following presentations:

"Fatigue in Nurses: An Evidence-based Management Plan," at the Maryland Patient Safety Council's  annual meeting.

"Reducing Fatigue Risk in Nurses, Individual and Organizational Strategies," at the Chesapeake Chapter of American Association of Critical Care Nurses' annual meeting.

 

Shannon Idzik, DNP '10, MS '03. CRNP, FAANP, assistant dean for the DNP program and associate professor, received the Outstanding Policy Award at the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Conference, held April 23-26 in Baltimore.

 

Sherrie Lessans, PhD '10, RN, assistant professor, has been named director of UMSON's Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) option. She will be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the CNL option's policies and procedures. Click here to read more.

 

Eun-Shim Nahm, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and director, Nursing Informatics specialty, co-authored the following article with PhD student Seonyoon Chung:

Anita Tarzian, PhD, RN, associate professor, has been named a member of the editorial team for the American Journal of Bioethics.

 

Alison Trinkoff, ScD, RN, FAAN, professor, presented, "The Impact of Work Schedule, Physical Demands and Sleep on Nurse Injury and Patient Outcomes" at the 22nd National Evidence-Based Practice Conference, Nursing Workload Balance- Quality Care and Staff Wellness, at the University of Iowa Health Center, April 24.

 

Alison Trinkoff, ScD, RN, FAAN, professor, attended the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Delegation Guidelines meeting as a member of the Experts Panel. The meeting was held April 23 in Chicago.
