Announcing Our Time Well Spent Awardees

To be recognized at Our Anniversary Event May 28th

Since 2005, the Collaboration Council has been recognizing outstanding individuals and public and private organizations in our community who have made a significant difference in the lives of our children, youth and families.  Join us for our 20th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, May 28th, as we recognize the following individuals and community group for their exceptional contributions to help further our organization's vision and mission:

Councilmember Nancy Navarro has dedicated her career to the well-being of children. First as the Founder and Executive Co-Director, of Centro Familia (1998-2004), a community-based organization with a mission to assist the economic and educational development of Latino and other immigrant communities. She then became a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education from 2004 to 2009; she served on the Community Action Task Group, Montgomery County Gang Task Force from 2005-07; she also served as Co-Chair of the Montgomery County Task Force on Quality Child Care for Immigrant Communities from 2002-03. Councilmember Navarro has represented District 4 on the Montgomery County Council since May 2009. And, in 2011, President Barack Obama appointed Councilmember Navarro as a member of the President's Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, where she serves on the Early Childhood Education Committee.

Gandhi Brigade Promoters help create change through civic engagement and media projects, bringing youth voices and perspectives to the forefront of government and the community. Gandhi Brigade has provided video and media instruction as a direct partner of Excel Beyond the Bell (EBB) for the last year, but for many years prior as a sub-partner. They currently serve as EBB teaching assistants at Argyle Middle School.

Angela English is an Administrator for Montgomery County Child Welfare Services (CWS), where she manages approximately 60 staff members including supervisors, and social workers. She serves on several boards, including the Collaboration Council, and on committees, like our Local Care Team, where she continues to promote inclusion and diversity within the collective body of child-serving agencies to ensure Maryland's children and youth with special needs are served in the least restrictive setting.

Dr. Sheryl Brissett-Chapman, has been a pioneer in serving vulnerable children, youth and their families as Executive Director of the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) for the last 25 years as well as in her former work in the areas of child maltreatment, sexual abuse, and juvenile justice. She serves as a role model, mentor, and cheerleader for not only her staff but the clients of the over 25 different programs operated by NCCF.

Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate the collective work of our Time Well Spent on Behalf of Montgomery's Children awardees! Be part of the crowd to cheer them on,  RSVP here today. The deadline is May 22.  It's FREE.  All we need is you!

20th Anniversary Congratulation Messages from Past Board Members

Lorraine Rogstad as the first Director who set the stage for continued success of the Collaboration Council through her vision, leadership and commitment. Also to Chuck Short and Lois Stovall as the first Co-chairs.- Bennett Connelly

Of course my most enduring memory of the Collaboration Council was when my son, who was a part of the return/divert program, was in danger of losing his funding from the state. I came with a group of parents to ask the Collaboration Council (I don't think they were called that yet) to help us. I am proud and grateful to say that the Collaboration Council did help us, and my son kept the funding. When Kathy Lally was hired as Executive Director, I called her up and told her I expected great things from her. She told me I should join the Board. Both of those things happened. Happy Anniversary Collaboration Council. Your good work, in so many cases, is behind the scenes but you've made Montgomery County a better place for children, youth and families. I'm proud I was a part of it.
-Debbie Van Brunt

I was lucky enough to be active on the Collaboration Council in its golden age, when we got our 501c3 status and state funding was plentiful. The Council has continued to do great things despite falling on hard times with funding - EBB has flourished, and you are doing great things in juvenile justice, in addition to continuing the hard work every Wednesday morning of developing creative solutions for the most high risk kids. Congratulations on resuscitating the DATA BOOK! - a great and useful gift from the Collaboration Council to the community. Have a great celebration!- Dr. Carol Garvey

The Collaboration Council has had a profound impact on Montgomery County in its 20 years. Through wonderful leadership, fantastic staff and true partnerships, it led the way in developing key systems and approaches that have supported the success and well-being of children, youth and families throughout the County. Congratulations on this great milestone and all that you have done for so many!

-Kate Garvey
