Old traditions recycled into life saving techniques.
Provided By Skip Kanester of the Center for Body Work Education. The Kato Method of Lymphatic Shiatsu differs from most shiatsu
in that approximately 70% of this style is friction and rubbing techniques.
Developed by Kiyoshi Kato and practiced in his clinics in Osaka, Seitai, along with a regulated diet, was used successfully in the treatment of terminal cancer and degenerative disease. Kato himself was diagnosed with a terminal disease as a young man. After curing himself with traditional therapies, he dedicated his life to the treatment of disease by natural methods. A big plus for western therapists is that knowing the location of the meridians and acupoints is not necessary to learn this form of bodywork. Also, clients remain fully clothed so there is no need for oil. Traditionally Seitai was done on a futon on the floor so if the therapist is comfortable, a massage table is not even necessary, it can be done anywhere.
Seitai Shiatsu focuses on the formation and circulation of blood, balancing the body's energy and harmonizing the internal organs. Circulatory/lymphatic-type strokes and a specialized diet were at the heart of this work. In Osaka, patients would come to one of Kiyoshi Kato's clinics
and stay for approximately three weeks. During this time they would be put
on a special diet and would receive two sessions of Seitai Shiatsu daily.
The patient's family would also come to the clinics with them to learn Seitai
so that treatment could be continued after the patients left to go home.
