Meet Tommy
Tommy, born at full term with no complications was developing on track meeting all of his milestones. On July 21, 2007, Tommy looked startled when he woke from a nap, but then he had that same look an hour later, and an hour after that.
Tommy was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms--and a structural problem in his brain. He experienced 10 to 100 seizures a day for four months. Tommy's family tried many medication combinations--nothing worked. They then tried steroid treatment. It worked--Tommy did not have a seizure for 20 months.
Tommy made huge developmental strides during this time. On August 4, 2009 Tommy's seizures returned, slowly at first but became more frequent and intense. Tommy had brain surgery to remove malformed brain cells on April 24, 2014.
"Although Tommy still suffers from seizures, they are
less severe and we have been able to reduce his meds so that he can start learning," says his mother Kerry.
"Like all parents, we're focused on providing Tommy with the
best possible quality of life we can. Through the programs of the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California, we will be able to do the best job to support him and those with his condition."
