Dear (Contact First Name),

Lenten Prayer

My loving Lord,
it's so hard to love the world sometimes
and to love it the way Jesus did seems impossible.
Help me to be inspired by his love and
guided by his example.
Most of all, I want to accept that I can't do it alone,
and that trying is an arrogance of self-centeredness.
I need you, dear God, to give me support in this journey.
Show me how to unlock my heart
so that I am less selfish.
Let me be less fearful of the pain and darkness
that will be transformed by you into Easter joy.

Former Principal of St. Leander School Passes Away
Joyce E. Braun, 85, of Le Mars, formerly of Palo Alto, California, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.

Joyce Elizabeth Braun was born December 1, 1929, at Chatsworth, Iowa, the eldest child of John F. and Helen F. (Groetken) Braun. The family moved to Le Mars, where she attended St. Joseph School. In 1946, she joined the Franciscan Sisters at Dubuque and taught for 22 years in schools in Iowa and in Portland, Oregon.

In 1972, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where her parents and brother, John lived. She worked in religious education programs and as a secretary in San Francisco. She was released from vows in 1976 and was the Principal of St. Leander School in San Leandro, California for 18 years and taught three years part-time for the school.

In 2000, she moved to Mountain View, California in order to care for her mother, who died in 2001. Joyce then moved to Stevenson House in Palo Alto, California. When her brother John died in January 2013, she moved back to Le Mars. Ms. Braun was a member of choirs and choruses most of her life. She liked to paint and
to travel. Joyce volunteered at her parish in Mountain View.

She is survived by a sister, Lois Walker and her husband Matt of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

Many of our school families have fond memories of their years with Ms. Braun. We thank God for the gift of her presence and ministry here at St. Leander School.

Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction

The 5th Annual Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, April 18th, and we are still in need of your help. As you should know by now, this is a fun-filled night for parents, students, relatives, and friends to come together, celebrate, and support St. Leander School.

Money raised at this event will be fully dedicated towards improving our students' educational experience. It's a fun family event that benefits all of our children!

Invite all of your friends and family to come and join us for this fun evening.  Here is the Facebook link for our event: Pasta Dinner on Facebook

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
  • Purchase tickets or sponsor a table and attend the event. Bid early and often on the great items that will be offered! Tickets available now in the school office and from Event Committee members
  • Donate great items to the Auction: Here are some examples: Dinners, Parties, Pay to Play Events, Tickets to Sporting Events & Gift Certificates
  • Encourage others to attend the event.

Pastor Fr. Paul Vassar to Retire

May 31, 2016 will be Fr. Paul's last day at St. Leander Parish. We will celebrate him at a fiesta on Friday, May 29th in the gym and he will be blessed at the Masses that weekend. More details will be forthcoming as plans are firmed up, but save the date! Fr. Hugo França has been appointed Parochial Administrator and will begin in June.

Summer School

Our summer session runs from June 15th through July 17th.  Please sign up by Friday to hold your space.  Registration will be open to non-school families beginning on Friday.  We cannot guarantee spaces will be available for late registration.  Once a classroom becomes full, we can no longer enroll students.  Please click on the link below to access an electronic version of the form  Summer 2015 Application

Happy Lent!

Your children brought home cardboard boxes for our annual Lenten collection for Operation Rice Bowl. Families are encouraged to make small sacrifices during this Lenten season and contribute to this important collection. You may return the rice bowls to the school office before Easter break or the week we return, or you may bring them to Mass on Holy Thursday evening.

Candy Sale Reminder
We only need to sell 14 more boxes of chocolate! If we are able to sell the remaining boxes, we will have a school wide popsicle recess for everyone!  Please send in all payments for chocolate to the office.

Capital Campaign Countdown

Exciting news! Our sinks and cabinets for the Science Classroom have arrived! They were delivered and unloaded on Monday. They will be installed during Easter vacation. Mark your calendar for the blessing of our room on Sunday, May 24th at 12:30 PM. Fr. Paul will bless the room and we will serve light refreshments. Our final push is to purchase the student work tables and stools. If you have not yet contributed to this important project, we welcome all donations--large as well as modest.  Every bit helps us finish our project and get our kids learning and working in the fully-equipped new room!
7th Grade Camp Fundraiser
The current 6th grade class is having a fundraiser to help offset the cost of their 7th grade trip to camp in the fall.  They will be selling beautiful graduation leis in many colors and styles.  Please click on the link for the order form.  Graduation Lei Order Form
