PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings to all BCGS Members and Friends,

All eyes are on September these days, when the Bucks County Genealogical Society, along with the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, will be hosting the 9th Annual Bucks County Ancestry Fair on Saturday the 19th at Bucks County Community College.  We're planning a "best ever" fair with three tracks of speakers, and a "Main Event" which we can now announce, called:  "Are Your Roots Showing?: Get the Scoop on Colin Goodnoe!"

The Main Event is modeled after the television show "Who Do You Think You Are", and will feature the presentation of Mr. Goodnoe's ancestry.  Many of you know that the Goodnoe family has operated the Goodnoe Dairy Bar in Newtown since 1955. Thanks to the Main Event Committee for doing such a great job of bringing this idea to life: Joann Cosgrove, Connie Taylor and Connie Ace!!

Our membership is holding steady at about 260, with over 650 on our mailing list - we are all a part of a terrific group of enthusiastic genealogists!

We hope you'll join us at our June meeting when, in honor of D-day, we will host speaker Patrick Connelly and learn about military research at NARA.  Don't forget that there is no meeting in July - we take a summer break and then reconvene in August.

Warm Regards,
Christine Roberts

Military Research at NARA
presented by  Patrick Connelly

I n honor of the anniversary of D-day, this program will provide information to assist researchers in investigating their ancestors' military history at the National Archives

About the speaker:

Patrick Connelly is an Archivist with the National Archives at Philadelphia.  Mr. Connelly received a BA in History from West Chester University in 1995 and a MA in American History from Villanova University in 1999.  He previously served as Archives Director with the National Archives at New York City and as a Local Records Archivist at the Library of Virginia.  He has been employed by NARA since 2000 where he presents lectures on a variety of genealogical and historical topics.

The meeting is open to the public.
Cost for members is $5 and for non-members it is $10.

REFRESHMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE JUNE 6TH MEETING

Can you help for this meeting?

We need someone to pick up two containers of coffee at Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. Both places supply the cups, stirrers, sugar and cream.  You will reimbursed by the BCGS treasurer at the meeting.  We also need one person to bring a snack.

Also, if you are a member and bring refreshments to a meeting, the meeting fee is waived. If you are a non-member and bring refreshments, the meeting fee is reduced from $10 to $5.

To sign up, please contact Joann Cosgrove at  [email protected]

Phyllis Rosner Wolfson believes in living a life in balance. Family, friends, work, learning, and leisure all are necessary components.

Phyllis grew up in Philadelphia. She was the oldest of five children. During her early years she lived in the same neighborhood in South Philadelphia as her twenty-two aunts and uncles, her grandparents, and her many cousins. While residing in West Philadelphia, Phyllis (the family book-worm) and the next two oldest siblings would hike through Cobbs Creek Park to the Free Library every week-end.   Phyllis graduated from Northeast High School.

Married at a young age, she had two children.  The family moved to Bucks County in the 1970's and Phyllis has lived in Newtown since 1977.  Since retiring from the State in 2006, Phyllis has volunteered one day a week at the Bucks County Conference and Visitor's Center on Street Road in Bensalem. She also volunteers with the Senior Medicare Patrol staffing tables at senior fairs and giving talks to educate seniors in ways of protecting their Medicare benefits.

Phyllis and her husband Alex have always loved to travel. They traveled about the United States in camper vans when their children were young. They have traveled to every continent except Antarctica. "It's too cold," she claims. One of her most memorable incidents while travelling was the discovery of her husband's Irish family roots while visiting the Dublin National Library.

Another great interest since retiring has been the research Phyllis is doing into the genealogy of her family. A membership with Ancestry gave her a great head start but as she tried to press further back into family history, she realized that she needed a more thorough education as to the "ins and outs" of genealogy research.  She says that the Bucks County Genealogy Society has filled that void with "its wonderful monthly programs and speakers that have been so educational."   Phyllis has traced her family back to the Russian Empire in 1860 and her husband's maternal ancestors back to the 1600's! But she now faces the challenge of researching her ancestors in France, Ireland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, and Italy.

Phyllis has been contributing research to the BCGS cemetery project. "It doesn't require me to block out specific days or times nor does it require large time periods to complete the work.   And I have made many new friends."   We are grateful to have Phyllis as a BCGS volunteer!

AHLUM - ALLEM FAMILY RECORDS

If you are looking for information on the Ahlum-Allem family, there is a wonderful source of 16,700+ names that has just been posted by BCGS member, Dennis Gries, on Rootsweb.  There are many thousands of Bucks persons on this database. This goes from the 1751 arrival of the Ahlum patriarch and his marriage to Anna Margaret Drach and includes the descendants of the 12 children.

 De
nnis and his wife Judy (she's the Allem) have been working on this since the late 1990s, and was initially encouraged by Fran Waite, formerly of the Spruance Library (and also a BCGS member), when he found no book for Judy's ancestors.  Here is the link and search information:

Go to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com.  At the landing page, on the left side, (under Search Engines and Databases) select "World Connect Project". On the next page, tap "Advanced Search". Then you are at the search page, and off you go!

Or, before you do this, on the left column, at "jump to a specific database", enter ahlum-allem, and tap GO.

The Cemetery Assessment Project (CAP) is almost finished.

There are only 59 cemeteries for which CAP forms are still needed;
and with your help, we'll finish this project by June 30th!

You don't need to go to the cemetery...just check this  cemetery list, pick a cemetery in your neighborhood, and complete the CAP.

Most of the information can be found on the Internet or by calling the cemetery management company or nearby church.

Complete as much as you can - don't worry about trying  to fill in everything on the CAP form   - and return it to Joann Cosgrove at  [email protected]

We appreciate your help!  Thank you.
