luncheonMAY 14: Teacher Appreciation Luncheon - flowers needed!

Miraloma honors its wonderful teachers, support and admin staff, and after-care teachers at the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon tomorrow (Thursday) immediately following early dismissal. Hosted by the PTA, parent volunteers will serve lunch while our ever-energetic Miraloma team take a rare moment to sit back and enjoy the company of their colleagues.

There are two needs for Thursday morning--

  • flowers from your gardens to help make the tables lovely
  • a few people who can move heavy tables

Please meet outside the cafeteria right after drop-off if you can help.

Many thanks to Peasant Pies and a myriad of parent bakers and volunteers who contributed to making this a special event for all of those who give so much to our children and families.

Shae Brown & Natalie Krelle-Zepponi

staffMAY 20: Staff Appreciation Collection - please give to say thanks!
Please show your appreciation and join us in a collective gift from the community to our wonderful Miraloma staff who support and interact with our kids on a daily basis, e.g. our librarian, custodial staff, lunchroom staff, counselors, student adviser, secretary, coach, etc.
In all we have over 20 staff members to thank!

If you would like to contribute, please donate online by May 20.
Thank you!

ptaMAY 27: PTA Meeting (FINAL one of the year!) - 8-9am, cafeteria

Please join us on Wed, May 27th in the cafeteria from 8-9am for the last PTA Meeting of this school year! We'll hear final updates on construction, enrollment for next year, new PTA Board members, fundraising recap, and review draft budget for 2015-16. In addition, we will take a moment at the beginning of the meeting to thank Janet Pandolfi for her long service at Miraloma so please come by and say thanks!

We know it's a busy week with many competing activities -- we will be very prompt and concise so that everyone can get where they need to be on time!

prop13PROP 13 REFORM: Sign the Petition Today & Support Our Schools!
This is an issue which has negatively impacted California schools and students for the last 47 years and it is time to change that. As citizens and parents, I ask you to get involved and sign this petition and share it with your community.

Here is more from a group leading the reform charge, Evolve California:

Proposition 13 was passed in 1978 to protect homeowners. Unfortunately, Prop. 13 created massive loopholes for corporations, allowing them to avoid paying fair property taxes even when their properties change hands. This large corporate giveaway hurts homeowners, students, and all Californians. We need to close the loophole and make corporations pay their fair share. According to the Legislative Analyst's Office, requiring corporations to pay property taxes based on the current value of their properties would generate at least $6 billion each year for California, including $2.5 billion per year for education.

nepal UPDATE on Miraloma's Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund
This community is amazing! We have raised over $4,000 from Miraloma families, about $500 of which came from the donation jar in the school office! Our students have been so sweet and thoughtful about putting some of their piggy bank money in the jar for the kids in Nepal. As the need still exists, we'll keep the jar going until the end of the school year.

All jar donations thus far have been donated to the Ama Foundation. You can read an article mentioning the kids at Miraloma helping the kids in Nepal: http://www.ama-foundation.org/kids-helping-kids/

Thanks to the kids at Miraloma, the Ama Foundation has been able to provide food, hygiene items, and children books to the many displaced children in Kathmandu, Nepal (who are currently living under a tent). Our kids should feel very proud of the wonderful work they have done.

Continue to help, if you can!
  • Make an online-donation: SEBS* or the Ama Foundation**.
  • Bring your family's donations in before school ends to the jar in the school office. All donations will go directly to the Ama Foundation.
* SEBS is a grassroots volunteer-based 501(c) (3) organization without bureaucratic expenses (100% will go directly to the relief effort and 100% is tax deductible), and will be providing "immediate" medical relief, as well as food and shelter.

** The Ama Foundation is a grassroots US-based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing the most underprivileged children of Nepal with a loving home, education, and healthy live, and is expected to provide home and education to many children that will be orphaned because of this earthquake.
