People in the workforce development field rightly deserve to feel proud and positive about the impact of our work. At the same time, we should be doing some deep soul searching about what we can do to make our work more effective. There are some hard and challenging questions we should be asking ourselves. If we can address the issues raised by these questions, it will make the workforce development field and our organizations even more effective. DO YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR CASE MANAGEMENT SKILLS?

SAME OCCUPATION DIFFERENT PAY!

Job seekers and workforce professionals will often hear about an occupation connected with a salary figure and instantly generalize that everyone in that occupation is making a similar amount of money. Nothing could be further from the truth! Occupational titles tell you very little about how much people are actually earning in that line of work. While its common knowledge that certain groups such as women or minorities frequently do not earn the same amount as others working in similar jobs, the salary differences within an occupational title itself are not as widely recognized. This great article will explain to you and your job seekers how wage data tied to an occupation must be scrutinized thoroughly to yield accurate information. ARE YOU GIVING YOUR EMPLOYEES
WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY?

As a manager in a workforce program, you are always looking for ways to increase productivity and employee job satisfaction.   Funding source restrictions mean that salary increases or monetary incentives may not be an option. But, there are many other things you can do to create a better workplace and increase employee job satisfaction, which will lead to more productivity. These strategies include different ways of bringing flexibility to your labor force. HOW TO IMPROVE YOUTH EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES!

There are many external forces at work that have an impact on low youth employment rates such as a lack of funding for youth employment programs, employer's hiring biases against youth and the gap between youth skill and education levels and labor market demands. However, there is an important and often overlooked internal reason that many youth employment programs are not as successful as possible in connecting youth with jobs. I wrote an article for the Chronicle of Social Change that discusses this issue. The Chronicle of Social Change is a leading online publication that covers issues of interest to people in child welfare, youth employment and other work related to improving the lives of youth. WHY EDUCATION ALONE WON'T OVERCOME
INCOME INEQUALITY

Workforce development professionals promote education as part of our work. Many people in our field think that education will level the income playing field. But as this article illustrates, while education is very important, it is not the single solution to making sure that the wage gap is addressed. Click here to read the article.

WHAT HAS LARRY BEEN UP TO?

I recently presented at two great conferences. The annual conference of the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals in Las Vegas was the first national workforce conference in many years to be sold out! Congratulations to the NAWDP board, staff and their hard working Executive Director Bridget Brown for turning out so many people! Over 1200 workforce development professionals attended with many more on the waiting list. It was a wonderful gathering of the workforce community. I am proud to say that over the years I have been invited to present more workshops for NAWDP than any other presenter.

This year I was fortunate to present to huge crowds for both of my workshops. My preconference session, How to Increase Employment Motivation in the Hard Core Hard-to-Employ brought together people from over thirty states. There were so many people in my second session, Cooperation, Coordination and Collaboration! How are They Different and How to Make Them Work Better! that I ran out of handouts even though I had printed many more than the conference organizers suggested. Make sure you go to the NAWDP website and check out their upcoming youth conference and look at the many benefits of membership in the organization.

The California Workforce Association is one of the most active state workforce associations. They produce three excellent conferences a year as well as providing many other benefits such as webinars, regular online updates about workforce development and many other services for their members. You do not have to be from California to join or benefit from being part of this organization.

Their conferences are highly engaging and cutting edge. Part of the reason for this is the conference organizing work of John Baker, a well known national workforce consultant who is known as the CWA Conference Curator. Bob Lanter, the Executive Director of CWA, who has many years of workforce development experience as well as the CWA board all play a very important part in making their conferences, webinars and other services incredibly valuable.

This year at the CWA annual conference, I presented Why Businesses Don't Partner with Us and How You Can Win Them Over! and Employment Counseling with the Hard-to-Employ! It is an honor for me to be able to say that over the years I have been invited to do more training for CWA than any other trainer.

COULDN'T MAKE IT TO THESE CONFERENCES?

YOU CAN STILL LEARN A LOT

FROM THE WORKSHOP HANDOUTS!

Both NAWDP and CWA are to be applauded for their practice of posting conference handouts on their websites where they can be downloaded. Go to the conference section of the websites to find the handouts. It is up to the presenters to get their handouts to the organizations for posting so not everything appears. You will see the handouts from my workshops.
