Dear Friends,

We move to our summer worship schedule this Friday starting with a wine & cheese pre-oneg at 6:00pm, Shabbat service in the Chapel at 6:30pm, followed by an oneg in the courtyard (weather permitting).

There are several prospective member events planned for this summer. If you know anyone looking to affiliate with a synagogue, please let them know about BJBE's upcoming gatherings, starting with an Open House at BJBE for families with young children on June 30. Information on this and other prospective member events are available in the section below and on our website.

It has been my pleasure to work with Cantor Ross Wolman since I joined the BJBE staff 3 years ago. Ross and his beautiful family are leaving this week for Arizona, where he will be serving Temple Chai in Phoenix. To stay in touch, you can reach Cantor Wolman at [email protected]. Post Carpool Club Summer Brunch & a Movie, June 28, 11:00am at BJBE. Join us for a special showing of When Comedy Went to School, with a lively discussion about the "Great Ones" of comedy, led by our own Alan Pearlman. Please invite your friends. Open House for Prospective Members with Young Families, Tuesday, June 30, 6:30-8:00pm at BJBE. Attention congregants. If you know anyone looking for their spiritual home, please encourage them to attend our first prospective member event of the summer for a chance to connect with other families with young children and tour BJBE. Take a walk on the wild side...Join fellow BJBE nature and hiking enthusiasts for Shabbat morning walks on Saturday, July 11 at Wright Woods and Saturday, August 1 at Cuba Marsh from 9:30 - 10:30am rain or shine. Enjoy beautiful trails with a two mile walk for adults and optional one mile walk for kids or adults. If coming as a family, you have the option of hiking together or your children ages 4-6 (with parent) or 7 & older can go on a shorter hike led by environmental science teacher, Todd Katz. Post Carpool Club will be going to Ravinia, Sunday, July 26, to enjoy "Play It Again Marvin," a Chicago Symphony program featuring the music of Marvin Hamlich. Brushstrokes: Discover your creative self and your compassionate self! Tuesdays, July 28 and August 4, 7:00 - 9:00pm. Bring your curiosity and your adventurous spirit! The very action of doing something different invites us to accept and embrace ourselves. We will learn to paint beautiful leaves and integrate mindfulness. This promises to be a unique, fun and relaxing experience. Marla Snyder teaches a class called "Watercolor for Those Who Don't Think They Can" in surrounding communities and is the Studio Art teacher at Chicagoland Jewish High School. Margot Andersen is a social worker and resilience builder for the challenges of daily living. All art supplies will be provided. Cost is $40.00. Please contact Margot Andersen to register.

Save the Date! Above and Beyond, Monday, August 24, 7:00-9:00pm. Thanks to a generous donation from Max and Benny's, BJBE is proud to announce an exciting free film event at BJBE. We will be showing the critically acclaimed documentary, Above and Beyond, which tells the story of a group of Jewish American pilots who answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the US., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. Rabbi Kedar will lead a lively discussion immediately following the film. Please contact Mert Silbar with questions.

Shabbat Service, Friday, June 19, 6:30pm - Our summer worship schedule begins with a wine and cheese pre-oneg at 6:00pm, service in the chapel at 6:30pm, followed by an oneg in the courtyard (weather permitting).

Shabbat mornings feature our Kol Shabbat service at 9:30am followed by Torah Study at 11:00am led this week by Ted Busch.

Wednesday Morning Minyan : Begin your day in a beautiful and powerful way by attending our Wednesday morning Minyan from 6:45am to 7:15am. Each week we pray in the intimate space of the Chapel with Rabbi Stoller and a supportive, welcoming group. Experience a prayer service grounded in communal song, thought-provoking liturgy, and deep silence, followed by camaraderie over bagels and coffee. Morning Minyan participants have commented that this worship has connected to their lives in many unexpected and transformative ways. For more information, contact Rabbi Stoller. The weekday prayer melodies are available here, although all are welcome to attend regardless of musical or prayerbook knowledge.

Join us Wednesdays 6:45pm - 7:15pm in the Chapel for Musical Minyan. This is a deeply spiritual way to transition into the evening. Make it part of your weekly worship. Experience beautiful music, pray together in community and be present for fellow congregants who need to say Kaddish for a loved one. All Wednesday evening Music Minyans are led with creativity and harmony by talented members of our congregation and special guests. The musical group Soul Zimra; Andy Dennen, Marcus Newman, and Gary Schaffel lead on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Susan Diamond leads sing-along style using video and short films on the second and fifth Wednesdays. Fourth Wednesdays are reserved for our younger musical congregants. Every Musical Minyan is a joy-filled experience you don't want to miss.

MORNINGS AT BJBE

W ednesday Morning Minyan: Our weekday morning Minyan meets i n the BJBE Chapel from 6:45 - 7:15am. Contact Rabbi Stoller for an audio CD of the weekday prayer melodies.

Thursday T'ai Chi Ch'uan: We offer a weekly Thursday morning T'ai Chi class led by Dr. Drew Serlin at 7:30am. There is no charge for these classes.

SOCIAL ACTION NETWORK

Please support Sisterhood's social action project to collect needed items for the Ark. We are accepting donations of aluminum foil, quart size Ziploc freezer bags, tissues, deodorant and feminine hygiene products. Look for the bin in the tzedakah nook with the Ark label.

We are not collecting used clothing at this time. However, we are collecting toiletries, batteries, hearing aids, eyeglasses, ink cartridges, and cell phones in addition to the project for the Ark mentioned above.

Jewish Federation of Greater Houston

Help us to help the most vulnerable in the Houston community devastated by the flooding. Over 11 inches of rain fell in some spots of Houston overnight and into the next day -- inundating byways and highways, slowing first responders, knocking out power and generally bringing the southeast Texas metropolis to a standstill. Hardest hit was Meyerland, Bellaire and Willow Meadows where so many in our community have lost everything. It will take days to assess damages and many months to recover and rebuild. The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston is mobilizing a community response to provide aid and support for people devastated by the May 26 flood. We are here to help individuals, families and our Jewish institutions, which sustained substantial damage.

CARING COMMUNITY

BJBE's Caring Community is a team of volunteers who can act as your extended family when your family needs additional support. Caring Community provides the following services: home delivered meals in times of need, transportation to/from temple or a medical appointment, phone support for people who are ill or lonely, senior education and caregiver support, chicken or vegetable soups (always available in the kitchen!) and a virtual food pantry. BJBE is certified as a Safer Synagogue by Jewish Community Abuse Resources, Education & Solutions (JCARES). Our leadership has been trained in understanding the impact of abuse across the lifespan and improving access to support for congregants experiencing abusive situations. Our 2015-2016 BJBE Sisterhood year is just beginning and we want you to be a part of all of the exciting programs and events we have planned for this year. Lehrhaus at OSRUI - June and July weekends. Lehrhaus is open to all adults interested in lifelong Jewish learning and living. Participants have the option to either attend Friday through Sunday, or spend Saturday only at camp, enjoying a taste of learning and OSRUI. In addition to studying with our exceptional faculty, Lehrhaus participants experience Shabbat at Camp. 2015 faculty include Rabbi Dr. Rachel Sabath Beit-Halachmi on "Israel and the Dilemma of Jewish Leadership Today" from June 26-28; and Prof. Charles Richter on "The American Jewish Experience: On Screen and On the Air" from July 24-26.
