Class Afloat is a Canadian based school founded in 1984 and is one of the world's leading experiential education opportunities. Class Afloat offers rigorous and internationally acclaimed academic programmes for Grade 11, 12, University and GAP year students, while sailing aboard a historic tall ship and exploring the world. Our 30th Class Afloat itinerary is now final and we want to give our fellow sailing community members a detailed look at the great route we have planned aboard the Gulden Leeuw, 'The Golden Lion' for next year.
The 2015-2016 academic year will begin on August 31, 2015 in the historic canal city of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The first semester will take our crew south to West Africa and across the equator to South America, stopping in Brazil and on to our first parent port in Buenos Aires, Argentina before crossing the South Atlantic via Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world. Our class will finish off their semester in Cape Town, South Africa.
Second semester begins January 16, 2016 in southern Africa and continues northwest to the mid-Atlantic islands of St. Helena and Ascension before making landfall in the Caribbean and finishing off the year with a fourth Atlantic crossing to our Graduation ceremony in Amsterdam.
As usual, the crew will explore the cultures, history and natural beauty of these ports, participate in voluntary service projects, and have a lot of fun along the way. The Gulden Leeuw, a spectacular 230 foot three-mast topsail schooner rigged Class 'A' tall ship will be home to our crew for the next school year.
Don't forget about this amazing opportunity for your members. Class Afloat offers our Young Sailor Scholarship to help sailors experience sailing all year long.
