Regatta Safety Officer Training Course

This Regatta Safety Officer Training Program was developed to enhance the experience of competitors at regattas.  It has evolved from a system of practices developed at CORK and has proven to work efficiently and effectively.  References to CORK throughout this course are for examples only.

The course is sponsored by Ontario Sailing, CORK / Sail Kingston and Kingston Yacht Club. It is conducted over 2 days & results in certification. The Certificate will be recognized and provided by Ontario Sailing.

Successful completion of the theoretical training on Saturday and the on-water practical session on Sunday will provide the participants with two of the three steps toward a Regatta Safety Officer Certificate.  Volunteering as an Assistant Regatta Safety Officer at a pre-approved regatta will complete the process which will result in a Safety Officer Certificate.

Dates: June 6 & 7, 2015

  • The in-class theory session will be conducted at Kingston Yacht Club Saturday June 6th, 2015 beginning at 9 am.  A lunch menu will be available at KYC.
  • The on-water practical skills session will be conducted at CORK / Portsmouth Olympic Harbour on Sunday June 7th, 2015.  PFD and foul weather gear will be necessary.
  • Participants should be prepared to do some preparatory work prior to arriving at the course.  Material will be sent via email or pick-up via Drop Box.

Cost: $103.96 (includes tax and a copy of the Geoff Webster book "Sail Safe: A guide to Regatta Organization & Safety")

Congratulations Pan Am Athletes!

Ontario Sailing would like to congratulate the athletes that have qualified from Ontario at the various qualifying events for the Pan Am Games.

The team consists of the following athletes from Ontario:

  • Brenda Bowskill (Radial)
  • Lee Parkhill (Laser)
  • Danielle Boyd (49er FX)
  • Evert McLaughlin and Alexandra Damley-Strnad (Snipe)
  • Dan Borg and Liana Giovando (Hobie 16)
  • Terry McLaughlin, David Jarvis, David Ogden and Sandy Andrews (J 24)

Ontario athletes represent 11 of the 17 athletes on the full team.

We would also like to congratulate our contract coach Thomas Fogh for his two years of work with some of these athletes. Thomas spent many days and nights traveling to run camps and to do regatta support. His commitment to the athletes showed in the many days he spent on and off the water supporting this program.

This program was supported by a $150,000 investment by Ontario Sailing over the past two years with financial support by the Province of Ontario through the Ministry Tourism, Culture and Sport.

Over the weeks leading up to the Games, Ontario Sailing has committed to support the athletes through more coach support, strength and conditioning, and nutritional support.

GO TEAM ONTARIO and TEAM CANADA!!!

Beware of Heat Related Stress

Since our coaches, instructors and athletes spend a great deal of time out in the sun, this is a timely reminder of some of the issues we need to be aware of ...

Remember to hydrate, cover up, take a break and to the coaches out there; remember your athletes.  Wear a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and cover up! If your boat has a Bimini, put it up.

Please take the time to read the materials from the Public Services Health & Safety Association regarding heat-related stress (links below) and share them with other athletes, parents, coaches, and instructors.

Class Afloat

Class Afloat is a Canadian based school founded in 1984 and is one of the world's leading experiential education opportunities. Class Afloat offers rigorous and internationally acclaimed academic programmes for Grade 11, 12, University and GAP year students, while sailing aboard a historic tall ship and exploring the world.
Our 30th Class Afloat itinerary is now final and we want to give our fellow sailing community members a detailed look at the great route we have planned aboard the Gulden Leeuw, 'The Golden Lion' for next year.

The 2015-2016 academic year will begin on August 31, 2015 in the historic canal city of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  The first semester will take our crew south to West Africa and across the equator to South America, stopping in Brazil and on to our first parent port in Buenos Aires, Argentina before crossing the South Atlantic via Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world.  Our class will finish off their semester in Cape Town, South Africa.

Second semester begins January 16, 2016 in southern Africa and continues northwest to the mid-Atlantic islands of St. Helena and Ascension before making landfall in the Caribbean and finishing off the year with a fourth Atlantic crossing to our Graduation ceremony in Amsterdam.

As usual, the crew will explore the cultures, history and natural beauty of these ports, participate in voluntary service projects, and have a lot of fun along the way.  The Gulden Leeuw, a spectacular 230 foot three-mast topsail schooner rigged Class 'A' tall ship will be home to our crew for the next school year.

Don't forget about this amazing opportunity for your members. Class Afloat offers our Young Sailor Scholarship to help sailors experience sailing all year long. For more information on our scholarship opportunities, please follow the link below to the scholarship section of the Class Afloat website.
