Dear friends of Metro DC PFLAG,

Although many of our members have been supporting us for some time, some of our newer followers may not know what Metro DC PFLAG actually does in their day-to-day work.

We thought we'd take the time to remind you of our three focuses in our goal of helping to keep families together: education, support and advocacy.

After all, it's hard to make effective use of the organization's resources if you don't know what tools and services we actually offer!
Education

Metro DC PFLAG is committed to providing accessible information to anyone who may have questions about a specific issue, or just want more information about the LGBT community in general.

As part of our objective to improve accessibility, we have chosen to include PDF versions of our reading materials in both Spanish and English.

PFLAG also continues to inform members about upcoming community events that offer the opportunity for  furthering their knowledge and personal growth.

This fall, we have several exciting opportunities available for individuals to become engaged in.

In October, the  Virginia Ties, a Transgender Information and Empowerment Summit, as well as  We are the Change, the 2015 National PFLAG Convention.

In November, we are proud to announce the  Gender East Conference, which offers training on various issues related to gender diversity to professionals, youths, and adults.

* More information about all of these events can be found on our  Events page. If you would like to inquire information on trainings, contact us at [email protected].
Support
One of Metro DC PFLAG's aims is provide supportive resources for LGBT allies, LGBT individuals and their friends or family. One of the primary ways in which we provide this support is through our local community groups.

Metro DC offers 14 different community groups throughout the DMV area to try to ensure accessible support is available.

Some of the groups have different focuses, such as being Trans or Youth focused. We even have a group in DC that speaks Spanish at their meetings.

Our groups meet monthly, depending on the particular community.

A full list of our groups can be found on our Community Support Groups site, which also provides contact information for the groups' coordinators and a calendar of upcoming group meeting dates and times.
Advocacy
Metro DC PFLAG has become a recognized and respected organization for their work with LGBT individuals and allies. With this reputation comes a responsibility to help create change through advocacy work.

Advocacy projects can take on a variety of appearances, depending on the issue and organizations involved.

Just recently, Metro DC PFLAG and its members showed support for the inclusion of gender identity in the Family Life Education curriculum of Fairfax County Public Schools. We could not have done this without the work of our parents and the Northern Virginia Advocates for Equality coalition, of which we are part of.

Because we focus in supporting all types of families,  our interns participated in a rally hosted by the Queer Undocumented Immigration Project on June 30, advocating for better human rights for LGBT individuals in immigration detention centers.

In addition to taking on advocacy roles for the work of other organizations, PFLAG's advocacy efforts can be requested by community members if a relevant issue arises. Contact our office for more information.
Have a suggestion on issues or events for PFLAG to become involved with? Let us know!

Sincerely,

Metro DC PFLAG
