MSW Information Session

Are you a declared CASC minor interested in the preferred admissions program? Come and join us for an MSW information session. We will include special presentations from the Jewish Communal Leadership Program and the Global Activities Scholarship Program.

MSW Statement Feedback Session

All declared CASC Juniors and Seniors interested in the preferred admissions program are encouraged to attend a feedback session for a chance to meet with current MSW students trained by SSW faculty to answer questions about the supplementary statement. You will have 20 minutes with an MSW student to use how you need it. Sign-up for a time slot.

Social Work and Sports Panel

A panel of recent School of Social Work graduates will discuss the emerging field of social work and sport. This event is part of this fall's LSA Theme Semester, Sports and the University. Food will be provided.

DECLARE Retreat

CASC is excited to launch the DECLARE retreat this semester! DECLARE is a day and half retreat that will allow you to dive deeply into thinking about your identities, your social justice work, and how you can work to implement change. The retreat is open to all declared CASC minors, and students who have met with a CASC advisor and plan to declare the minor. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until spots are filled. Please complete the DECLARE application form here

Senior Audits

CASC has moved to an online auditing system. You should complete your major degree audit before you complete your minor degree audit. Please complete this form to help us complete your minor audit release. Price of Life Events
Price of Life is a growing coalition of over 70 organizations which aims to mobilize students and faculty at U-M against human trafficking on campus, in Ann Arbor, in Michigan, and internationally. Learn more about the week-long events occurring on campus.

LSA Newnan Advising Center in coordination with several specialty units will host, "SuccessFest: Everyone Needs This." This is a trade show style opportunity for students to discover entities around U-M who can help them define and achieve success at the University.

Intersecting Faith and Social Justice
Join the U-M School of Social Work and Student Union as they present, "' What's Faith Got to do With It?': Navigating Personal Faith, Social Service, and the University." This interfaith panel discussion will explore the intersection of faith and socially just practice. Panelists will share how their spiritual traditions and beliefs inspire their work. Dialogue on Ferguson
Working to understand the events revolving around Michael Brown's death in Ferguson? Continue the dialogue at, "Looking Back and Looking Forward: A Dialogue on Ferguson." An informal discussion will take place to consider the current and historical dimensions of the Ferguson crisis and what might be the way forward for those committed to the cause of racial justice. Food will be provided.

Education in Detroit Panel
All are welcome to attend a panel event, "The Future of Education in Detroit." The Education Policy Initiative has invited three key Detroit education leaders to discuss the reforms to the K-12 education within the economic, social, and historical context of Detroit. Learn more about the event.

Faith Communities Panel Event
Join various faith communities as they talk about working for justice, healing, and restoration. The discussion will address how religious organizations in Washtenaw County are responding to crime, those harmed by crime, and society's reaction to crime. Abortion Speak Out
Students for Choice is holding their second annual Abortion Speak Out. The purpose of this event is to provide a safe and supportive space for anyone in the U-M community to share their personal abortion story while ending the shame and silence caused by historical and social stigmatization of abortion in America. All stories are welcome in this space. Learn more about the event.

GIEU Information Session
Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates is having an information session for students interested in collaborating with communities through a service learning project. There are available sites and programs all around the world. Program Advisor Ebony Ellis and past program participants will be available to answer any questions during the information session. Learning from the Community Series
The Ginsberg Center is hosting numerous workshops within the series, "Learning from the Community." The October workshop, "Finding the 'You' in Community Service," is designed for individuals to reflect on how their volunteer experiences impact the skills and knowledge they possess. Through discussion with other volunteers, individuals will deepen their understanding of what meaningful community service is and the different roles they can play when volunteering. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP to the workshop.

The Michigan Association of Communication Studies presents, "Drive Your Career," with the Intern Queen and author of "Welcome to the Real World," Lauren Berger. Undergraduate Diversity Scholars Network
The Undergraduate Diversity Scholars Network was created by the National Center for Institutional Diversity. Designed to be a support system for students involved in research related to issues of social justice and diversity, this program creates a community of emerging scholars with similar research interests, offers resources for personal, professional, and academic growth, and connects students to prominent local and national professionals. MHI Prospective Student Day
The U-M  School of Information (UMSI) is hosting, "MHI Prospective Student Day." This is an opportunity for students interested in the Master of Health Informatics, a joint program with the School of Public Health. Learn more and register for the the event.

Readers Needed for Readers & Best
The Ginsberg Center is partnering with the Athletic Department to provide one-time volunteer guest reading opportunities in Ann Arbor Public Schools. Readers & Best will allow U-M students to share the joy of reading with children in Ann Arbor elementary schools. Guest readers will read a pre-selected book that celebrates individuality and facilitate a post-reading activity. They will travel together in a U-M van and receive a lesson plan with needed materials. Sign up for a Friday session. Background checks required. Contact the Ginsberg Center for more information.
 
The Skimm
The Skimm is an email newsletter sent to individual's inboxes Monday through Friday morning. It gives a brief and witty update about the world news. Created by two ex-NBC producers, the Skimm is designed for people who do not have time to listen or read the news everyday. Subscribe to the Skimm.
 
Michigan Makers Volunteers Needed
The Michigan Makers project, a service learning activity sponsored by the U-M School of Information, is a chance to work in community with students grades 4-8 in the Ann Arbor area. On Wednesdays, Michigan Makers mentors bring activities and meet with students after school for 90 minutes. This is an opportunity to help students develop teamwork, perseverance, and creative thinking. Learn more about last year's Michigan Makers activities. Background checks are required. Assist NECHAMA in Flood Relief
NECHAMA: Jewish Response to Disaster is cleaning up homes in Detroit that have been damaged in the August floods and they need volunteer support. Learn about their recent efforts.
Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

Funding for Student Organizations

CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for funding. CASC has a limited pool of money that CASC students are eligible to apply for. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. To apply for funding, students must submit a funding proposal that includes the following information: student org name, contact info, SOAS account number, event name, summary of event, date of event, complete budget. Email questions to [email protected].

The Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha is hiring two organizers, one to organize retail cleaning workers (must speak Spanish) and one to organize fast food workers in Minneapolis (Speaking Spanish is ideal, but not necessary). YBMen Project

Professor Watkins is seeking students to assist with a new project, "Implementing and Evaluating a Facebook Intervention for Young Black Men." The five-week project was developed due to the need for targeted interventions addressing the link between hegemonic masculine ideologies and poor mental health for college aged Black men. Students involved with the project will finalize Facebook content, monitor the Facebook group, screen potential participants, collect/analyze survey and interview data, and attend project meetings. Contact Professor Watkins to work with the project.
