Welcome Back Ice Cream Social
Join us tomorrow for an ice cream social! Enjoy a mid-afternoon break talking community action and social change, reconnecting with friends in the CASC community, finding out more about new CASC programming and classes, and soaking up the last days of summer (the weather report says 70 tomorrow!)!

Senior Audits

CASC has moved to an online auditing system. You should complete your major degree audit before you complete your minor degree audit. All senior audits should be completed online by following this link or by going to My SSW on the School of Social Work website. Please send any questions about this process to [email protected].

Special Studies: DECLARE Retreat 
CASC is launching a new retreat called "Declare: Develop Explore Challenge Learn Act Reflect Empower." The retreat will focus on critical social identity reflection, community engagement, and self-development. Students are able to enroll in this course as a 1-credit special studies course that will count towards Diversity. Students can also participate in the retreat without taking it for credit. Global Service Trip Opportunity

FriendsUM is running a one-month service trip to Chacraseca, Nicaragua. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to work in a health clinic, teach English, be involved in environmental revitalization, engage with the community through construction, and lead and develop enrichment programs for children. All interested individuals are welcome to attend a mass meeting. Direct further questions to Rachel Limb.

Preparing for Internship Opportunities in Washington DC 
The Career Center's Public Service Internship Program is designed to help students learn the tools they need to secure and successfully complete an internship in Washington, DC. The program is for undergraduate students from all majors and interests. Students will be able to apply their academic studies to a career in public service. Learn more about PSIP and completing the application. Applications are due September 28 at midnight. For more information, attend a mass meeting or email the PSIP coordinators with any questions.

Deconstructing the School-to-Prison Pipeline

Join the Student Representation Project to discuss the school-to-prison pipeline and alternative strategies that can improve the academic future of Michigan's students. Panelists will include experts on efforts to reform school discipline practices, keeping children out of the juvenile justice system, and providing high-quality education alternatives. We invite you to join the conversation.

Office of Student Services Training Session 

Join OSS for a training session for student organization leaders. This will be a review of the registration process, a discussion of policies, and an opportunity for student organizations to share best practices with each other. CASC students are encouraged to register their organizations with OSS and attend the training. Anyone interested in starting a new student organization are also welcome. RSVP by Friday, September 19. Please indicate any topics that you would like addressed during the session.

Gen Silent Film Documentary 
This Gen Silent Film Documentary will begin a series of events titled, Aging Across the Spectrum, which will raise awareness about and promote dialogue around issues facing LGBTQ older adults.

Careers in Community Organizing for Social Justice Information Sessions
The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will host information sessions to discuss careers in community organizing with individuals interested in empowering communities and working for social change. Family Learning Institute Volunteer Opportunity

The Family Learning Institute is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap in Washtenaw County. FLI offers free one-on-one individualized tutoring for 2nd-5th graders who are at least one grade level behind in math and/or reading and who receive free lunch. Youth Arts Alliance!

Youth Arts Alliance! is a five-county art collaborative in Southeast Michigan. YAA! provides creative arts workshops inside juvenile detention and residential treatment facilities in southeast Michigan. To learn more about YAA!, visit their website.

 

Telluride Fellowship

Telluride House is a merit-based residential fellowship committed to establishing a vibrant community supporting democratic ideals of self-governance, a stimulating intellectual environment, and a commitment to public service. House-members range from first years to PhD students, and are joined by faculty fellows from several fields. RSVP here to attend an open house dinner and information meeting by September 21.

The Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist Program 

Looking to take your activism idea to the next level? VSA can work with you to create a product that will advance your activism as well as potentially benefiting other activists. The fellowship includes a $10,000 stipend, housing for four weeks, and opportunities to interact with faculty & students at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Find details on the fellowship and information on applying here.

 

Participate in Supporting Literacy Development with the Ginsberg Center

Student volunteers are needed to run book clubs, help out at schools, and serve as literacy mentors. Volunteers can sign-up for weekly and one-time opportunities in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Detroit. For more information, attend an info session.

Dawn Farm Education Series

Dawn Farm Education Series is a free annual series providing helpful, hopeful, practical information about chemical dependency, recovery, family concerns, and related issues. The Education Series is designed to reduce the misinformation, secrecy, shame and stigma that prevent people with addictions and their families from getting help and getting well, and to help create a community culture that supports recovery. Find additional information on the dates and topics of each session here.

Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

Funding for Student Organizations

CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for funding. CASC has a limited pool of money that CASC students are eligible to apply for. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. To apply for funding, students must submit a funding proposal that includes the following information: student org name, contact info, SOAS account number, event name, summary of event, date of event, complete budget. Email questions to [email protected].

 

Rosalie Ginsberg Scholarship for Community Service and Social Action

Inger and William Ginsberg established the Rosalie Ginsberg Scholarship Fund in honor of William's mother. Up to two $3,000 scholarships will be awarded this year to support U-M students holding junior or senior standing this fall, are enrolled full-time, who demonstrate a commitment to community service or social action, and who have financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Preference is given to students from Cuyahoga County, Ohio; thereafter to students from Ohio; and thereafter to any student. 

Application Deadline: September 19, 2014   

 

Shuyi Li Scholarship for Community Service and Social Action

New this year is the Shuyi Li Scholarship, a Ginsberg alum (LSA, '12). Up to two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year to support U-M students holding first- or second-year standing this fall who demonstrate a commitment to community service or social action and who demonstrate financial need. Scholarship candidates must demonstrate strong community service or social action involvement, as well as financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The Success by 6 Great Start is a collaboration of over 40 organizations in Washtenaw County working to make positive change in the early childhood system. Their mission is to ensure that all children enter school with the skills ready to be successful. A major part of their work involves bringing organizations together to fill gaps or to encourage programs to work together to better meet the needs of young families. Learn more about this paid internship here.
