Register for So Cool, So Just Student Org Fair 
CASC is hosting the third annual social justice student org fair! Be a part of the amazing student orgs on campus dedicated to social change. Interested in registering your group to participate in the fair? Register your group to participate in So Cool, So Just no later than Wednesday, September 10th at 5 pm.  

Welcome Back Ice Cream Social
Mark your calendars for our welcome back ice cream social in the School of Social Work courtyard. Enjoy a mid-afternoon break talking community action and social change, reconnecting with friends in the CASC community, finding out more about new CASC programming and classes, and soaking up the last days of summer!

MSW Info Sessions 

CASC is hosting a number of info sessions for students considering applying to the University of Michigan School of Social Work through the Preferred Admissions program. Please see a full calendar of MSW-related events here.

 

Senior Audits

CASC has moved to an online auditing system. You should complete your major degree audit before you complete your minor degree audit. All senior audits should be completed online by following this link or by going to My SSW on the School of Social Work website. Please send any questions about this process to [email protected].

Additional CASC Courses
Special Studies: DECLARE Retreat 
CASC is launching a new retreat called "Declare: Develop Explore Challenge Learn Act Reflect Empower." The retreat will focus on critical social identity reflection, community engagement, and self-development. Students are able to enroll in this course as a 1-credit special studies course that will count towards Diversity. Students can also participate in the retreat without taking it for credit. RCSSCI 461/SOC 489: Organizing: People, Power and Social Change

This course introduces you to the theory and practice of organizing for social justice. Topics

covered include: the nature of organizing; the role of the organizer; motivating collective action through appeals to narratives, values and interests; resources and power; leadership development; building community capacity; strategy and tactics; campaigns; organizational structure and governance. Course readings provide theoretical, historical, and practical frameworks for developing knowledge and skills in these domains, drawing on scholarship in history, political science, sociology, organizational studies, and social, developmental and cognitive psychology. Gender and Disability in Visual Culture
Join the UM Disability Studies Group and the Visual Culture Workshop in welcoming Professor Rosemarie Garland-Thomson for a presentation on examining disability in visual culture and its intersection with gender. This presentation provides an analysis of how gender and disability intersect in several fields of representation including popular media, portraiture, classical art, advertising, self presentation venues, film, and art photography. Detroit Design Festival Event 

The Villages CDCthe Detroit Collaborative Design Center and Jefferson East Incare looking for talented, innovative artists interested in interactive, well-designed art installations. Chosen installations should be influenced by Park(ing) Dayan annual international event that happens each September where designers, artists and other creatives transform parking spots into temporary public spaces. Family Learning Institute Volunteer Opportunity

The Family Learning Institute is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap in Washtenaw County. FLI offers free one-on-one individualized tutoring for 2nd-5th graders who are at least one grade level behind in math and/or reading and who receive free lunch. To become a volunteer, attend one coach orientation (times listed below) and complete a background check. Youth Arts Alliance!

Youth Arts Alliance! is a five-county art collaborative in Southeast Michigan. YAA! provides creative arts workshops inside juvenile detention and residential treatment facilities in southeast Michigan. To learn more about YAA!, visit their website.

 

Peer Educators Needed for Sexperteam

Sexperteam is a diverse group of U-M students who educate campus communities about sex and relationships. They are looking for 10-20 peer educators for the 2014-2015 school year. Peer educators will facilitate interactive relationship activities with students, present programs on sexuality to groups across campus, and build skills in program development and community outreach. Telluride Fellowship

Telluride House is a merit-based residential fellowship committed to establishing a vibrant community supporting democratic ideals of self-governance, a stimulating intellectual environment, and a commitment to public service. House-members range from freshman to Ph.D students, and are joined by faculty fellows from several fields. The Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist Program 

Looking to take your activism idea to the next level? VSA can work with you to create a product that will advance your activism as well as potentially benefiting other activists. The fellowship includes a $10,000 stipend, housing for four weeks, and opportunities to interact with faculty & students at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. For details on the fellowship and information on applying or nominating an individual, click here.

 

Participate in Supporting Literacy Development with the Ginsberg Center

Student volunteers are needed to run book clubs, help out at schools, and serve as literacy mentors. There are also openings for student site leaders on the literacy leadership team. Volunteers can sign-up for weekly and one-time opportunities in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Detroit. For more information, attend an info session.

Dawn Farm Education Series

Dawn Farm Education Series is a free annual series providing helpful, hopeful, practical information about chemical dependency, recovery, family concerns, and related issues. The Education Series is designed to reduce the misinformation, secrecy, shame and stigma that prevent people with addictions and their families from getting help and getting well, and to help create a community culture that supports recovery. Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

Funding for Student Organizations

CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for funding. CASC has a limited pool of money that CASC students are eligible to apply for. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. To apply for funding, students must submit a funding proposal that includes the following information: student org name, contact info, SOAS account number, event name, summary of event, date of event, complete budget. Email questions to [email protected].

 

Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program for US students offers students and recent alumni the opportunity to work and conduct research in over 140 countries. There are academic, arts, and teaching assistantship grants available. Learn more and apply here
