TRC Annual Report

Our mission is to provide training, technical assistance, service, and evaluation to professionals and caregivers working to improve the well-being of families, children, and communities. Through a collaborative partnership with the University Training Consortium and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services Department for Community Based Services, the team of staff and associated faculty at the TRC furthered this mission in fiscal year 2015 by providing training and support to thousands of Kentuckians. Services were provided to health and human service providers, foster and adoptive families, and relative caregivers through an array of programs.

Fiscal Year 2015 also saw continued development of new ideas and the ongoing improvement of existing efforts. To learn more about all of the services provided by the UK TRC from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, please view the TRC Annual Report here.

What Works in Child Welfare Conference
On April 30, 2015, Kentucky's Statewide Citizen Review Panel (CRP) hosted the Third Annual "What Works in Child Welfare" conference in Lexington. Initially conceived by the CRP as a way to showcase emerging and evidence-based practices in child welfare, the conference has grown to include numerous topics of interest to child advocates.

"There are a lot of opinions out there about what is wrong with child welfare," said Blake Jones. "We want to showcase some things that are going right." Participants were treated to a number of excellent speakers, including a panel discussion (led by Commissioner Teresa James) about managed care organizations and Medicaid. Other topics included Project SAFESPACE: Systematic Screening and Assessment of Behavioral Health Needs for Children in Out-of-Home Care, Working with Caregivers who use Alcohol and Drugs, Preparing the Next Generation: Learning from Former Child Welfare Workers, and Fayette County Model Court Assessment Pilot Project.

Participants were also broken into small groups and asked to brainstorm ways that they could work together to better protect children and families. Each participant filled out a postcard to themselves and promised to do one thing for a child, family, or worker. There were a number of great promises given, including writing a letter of thanks to a foster parent and taking a CPS worker out for lunch.
