Summer Babies and the Kindergarten Decision: Oldest or Youngest?

Presented by Mary Beilman, M.A. ECSE

The minimum age for compulsory school attendance in Massachusetts is six. Some parents struggle with the decision on whether to send their summer-birthday 5 year old to kindergarten, or wait until the following September when they will be six. How do you make the decision to send them as the youngest or the oldest in their class? Age, physical, social, and emotional development are all pieces of the puzzle, in addition to how your child will do academically. Each child is unique as they bring their own experiences, emotions and biology to the classroom. This seminar will provide opportunities for parents to learn how to determine if their child is ready for kindergarten, and what to consider when making the decision.

Thursday, January 28, 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Co-sponsored by and held at Goodnow Library, Sudbury

Making a Will - Do You Know What Would Happen to Your Child if Something Happened to You?
David Feakes of The Parents Estate Planning Law Firm in Acton will present information to parents while children are supervised in our playroom by our staff. David will outline the 9 easy steps you can take to ensure your children will be taken care of by the people you want in the way you want if something were to happen to you. Included will be how to:
  • be sure your children never spend a moment in the care of strangers
  • avoid the expenses and delays of a long, drawn-out court process
  • protect your children's inheritance
  • make sure your money is immediately available to your child's guardians
  • pass on your intellectual, spiritual and emotional assets
Wednesday, February 3, 10:00-11:30 a.m. at First Connections in Acton. Childcare provided with reservations.

The Talk: Realistic Strategies to Protect Kids from Sexual Abuse, Presented by Nora Shine, Ph.D.

In this workshop, Dr. Shine draws upon her 20 years of clinical experience as a child and family psychologist, her knowledge of evidence-based sexual abuse prevention strategies, as well as her experience as a parent. The result is a  research-based plan that parents and educators can use to prevent the sexual exploitation of children. The workshop is designed to reduce the anxiety associated with this topic so that participants can feel open to learning the new information and methods that work. Included will be:

  • Facts about child sexual abuse
  • How to integrate abuse prevention into good parenting and teaching practices so children feel supported and protected
  • How to recognize adult behaviors that should raise concern
  • Language for adults to calmly and confidently address concerning behaviors in others
  • How to overcome our own embarrassment and hesitation with this difficult topic so we are available to help our children.

Tuesday, March 15, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Reuben Hoar Library, Littleton

Age-Specific Playgroups

Infant Playgroup for Ages 3-9 Months meets Thursdays, 10:30-11:30
This group gives parents support and connection, and helps babies socialize and develop new mobility and early-literacy skills through rhymes, songs, short stories and finger-plays. Held at Sargent Memorial Library, Boxborough

Older Baby Playgroup for Ages 10-17 Months meets Thursdays, 10-11:00
This group is for babies who are just about to be toddlers and toddlers who have just stopped being babies. We will do a short story and singing time, and then let the children play. The facilitator will be available to talk to and answer questions, but we won't have the same structured adult talking time as in baby playgroup because the children are starting to move around, and sitting still for more than a few minutes is too much to ask! Held at the Pierce House, Lincoln

Large Motor Playgroup for Ages 18-30 Months meets Fridays, 10:00-11:00
This group is held in a preschool gym, and is a great way for kids to get some energy out while also learning social and school readiness skills. In addition to circle time, children will work on running, balancing, jumping, throwing and kicking a ball. Not appropriate for infant or older siblings, or not-steady walkers. Meets at Woods Edge Children's Center, Sudbury

Paint & Playgroup for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 Year Olds meets Mondays, 10-11:30
This group includes a developmentally appropriate art project each week in addition to circle time with songs and stories, snack time, and free play time. We follow the same schedule each week so children get used to the routine. Not appropriate for siblings over 6 months. Infants welcome in a carrier.
Held at Nashoba Early Learning Center, Westford

Thrive by Five: Teaching Your Preschooler About Spending and Saving Playgroup for 3 thru 5 Year Olds meets Mondays, 2:00-3:00
You may not realize it, but money is a big part of your preschooler's life. Our children watch commercials, thumb through catalogs, observe adults buying groceries, accompany us to the bank, and watch as we slide our debit card multiple times a day. We will read stories about money, sing number songs, play games, count, and make choices while we pretend to shop or save for a desired item. There will be a weekly  handout for parents with suggested activities you can continue with your child as they grow, and a field trip to a credit union. (This is the same curriculum as last winter, in case your child has already participated). Held at First Connections, Acton

Multi-Age Playgroups

Paint and Play for Siblings Aged 2-5 meets Tuesdays, 10-11:30
This group includes a developmentally appropriate art project each week in addition to circle time with songs and stories, snack time, and free play time. We follow the same schedule each week so children get used to the routine. This space allows for young siblings to play on quilts if parents need to assist with the older child's art project or circle time. Held at Village Nursery School, Harvard

Multilingual Raising a Reader Group for Ages 1-5 meets Tuesdays, 2-3:30 This group is for children who are being raised in a home where a language other than English is spoken. The group includes circle time with songs, and families are invited to share a book in their home language with the group, if desired. All families receive a bag of books to take home and read each week, exchanging them for a new bag the following week. Our goal is to have books in all the languages spoken by families in the group, so please let us know what languages are spoken in your home when you register. (Limited to 12. Families who participated in this group last fall will be waitlisted until January 4, then registered as space allows).
Held at Union Congregational Church/The Community School, Maynard

Sing and Play in Spanish for ages 1-5 meets Thursdays, 1:30-3:00
This playgroup is for parents and children who already speak or understand Spanish. All songs, stories and conversation will be in Spanish, led by Ibeliza Tovar, a Venezuelan Spanish Montessori Teacher who donates her time generously to this high-quality program. This is a great way to connect with other families who are bilingual. This program may have a wait list.
Held at Reuben Hoar Library, Littleton

Monthly Post-Adoption Group for Parents of Children Ages 0-8

January 20: "Who's Story is it Anyway?" We'll address how we want to describe and share information about our child's adoption. What part of the adoption process is ours as the parent, and what part of the "story" is private and meant for our children only? We'll also talk about privacy versus secrecy and why understanding the difference for our children is essential.

February 17: The Typical Effects of Adoption during Developmental Stages. We'll explore how adoption impacts children at different stages of development and how this can present challenges for both parent and child. For parents, each level of your child's psychological and physical growth process may open a different door for an adoption discussion, so understanding what is on the horizon helps you be better prepared.

March 16: A Look at Life Books - How to Involve Your Child in the Process. A Life Book is a life-long keepsake for the adopted child. We'll talk about how to begin, what to include in the project, and how to create an interest in it that encourages your child's participation in the process.

Our free, professionally-facilitated support and education group is a place where adoptive parents can meet and share resources with other adopted families, as well as build their parenting skills with adoption-specific educational topics and tools. To be added to the monthly email reminder list email [email protected]. To contact the facilitator, Mary Rowlinson, R.N., email [email protected].

Meets at First Connections in Acton on Wednesdays, 7-8:30 p.m.
