| Herve Talabardon: 3000 miles at 69 years-young. The Race Across America (RAAM) isn't just for the young solo riders capable of pedaling its 3,000 mile distance in 8 or 9 days. There are also age groups for the more senior riders. A highlight of the 2015 race was the performance of French rider Herve Talabradon. who at age 69 now holds the record for the oldest racer to ever finish RAAM. Remembering the Los Angeles Lakers' 33-Game Win Streak
|
The Golden State Warriors won their first 24 games this season with fast-paced, non-stop action, unselfish teamwork, electrifying players, and shots made from all conceivable angles. It was remarkably entertaining and effective.
Then on December 12, in Milwaukee, the streak ended as all streaks must, sooner or later. It was the final game of a grueling, seven-game road trip.
If you add their four final regular-season games from last spring, they had won 28 straight, one more than the Miami Heat and five less than the Los Angeles Lakers streak of 1971-72.
Most fans are too young to know about the phenomenal Lakers' run but Mitch Chortkoff knows it well. He was there for every game.
Last Friday afternoon the acclaimed sportswriter, now 75, sat down to reflect on what it was like. In those days Mitch covered the Lakers for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and he was the only reporter covering the Lakers full-time, which is unheard of today. With the demise of the Herald Examiner, he is now a sports editor for the Culver City Observer and still covers the Lakers.
"What was so special to me about the 33-game streak," Mitch explained, "was that they also won 16 road games. I don't think any team has matched that since."
Though there were many daily papers in 1972, sports editors were cost-conscious. "The sports editor of the Los Angeles Times told his Lakers' beat writer to come home immediately if the streak ended. I was standing next to the team bus after the Lakers lost," Chortkoff added. "Mal Florence (the Times' beat writer) told Coach Bill Sharman he wasn't continuing on the road trip with the team. Bill asked why. 'I don't travel with losers,' Florence replied."
In that game, the Lakers lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, 120-104 and the Bucks' Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led all scorers with 39 points. Milwaukee pulled ahead in the second quarter and never looked back.
Forty-four years later, the 33-game streak still stands. It is not only an NBA record but no team in major league baseball, the NHL or NFL has ever accomplished it.
The Lakers went on to post a 69-13 regular season record and won their first Los Angeles NBA championship over the New York Knicks in five games.
In the 1960s, guard Jerry West and forward Elgin Baylor led the Lakers to the NBA finals six times in eight years against the Boston Celtics. The Celtics, behind Bill Russell, won every series. Russell then retired and Los Angeles acquired the legendary center, Wilt Chamberlain, but still lost to New York in 1970 finals. In 1971 West was injured in the spring and they failed to make the finals. The 1971-72 season seemed to be the last chance for the aging team.
Baylor, 37 and hobbled by injuries, retired days before the steak began on November 5, 1971. He was replaced by a 23-year-old speedster, Jim McMillan, in his second NBA season.
Bill Sharman, in his first season as Lakers' head coach, redefined the lineup with a fast-break offense, strict conditioning, ingenuity, and the players excelled in their new roles.
Chamberlain, then the NBA's all-time scoring leader, was asked to rebound instead, play defense, block shots and heave the outlet pass in transition to West, Gail Goodrich, Happy Hairston and McMillan. The Lakers' margin of victory during their 33-game streak was an eye-popping 17 points per game.
West and Goodrich each averaged 26 points per game that season, while Wilt averaged only 15 points. Their bench of Keith Erickson and Pat Riley -- yes, THAT Pat Riley -- kept the pressure on when the regulars rested.
This up-tempo style, not unlike today's Golden State Warriors, dominated their opponents. They won their 33rd straight on January 7, then lost in Milwaukee two days later. (Ironically, today's Milwaukee Bucks, also playing at home, snapped the Warriors' streak, as well.)
Riley remembers how physically draining it was on the players. "We had to play back-to-back-to back games four times that season," he said. (The NBA Players Association no longer allows this schedule.) Teams took commercial flights, not chartered, and there were no computer-assisted scouting reports. What passed for scouting reports were verbal exchanges among players. The league had not yet adopted a three-point field goal and only two referees worked each game, which made it physically impossible to see all the fouls or potential fouls.
Chortkoff, who has seen all this, added some relevant observations. He focused on Jerry West, the one basketball figure who was a key player on the 1971-72 Lakers team and a consultant with the Golden State Warriors since 2011
"Jerry wanted to win so bad," Chortkoff stated. "He talked about it all the time but he had to wait until 1972."
Later, in his position in the Lakers' front office, West negotiated a huge contract for Shaquille O'Neal.
Chortkoff continued, "If it weren't for Jerry, the Lakers wouldn't have had that string of championships. It was draining but he got Shaquille on a long contract. He also insisted they trade a first-round pick for this skinny high school kid in Pennsylvania -- Kobe Bryant. He had to fight for that.
"And the Warriors would not have won the championship last spring if it weren't for Jerry. He told them to trade Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut and they wanted to trade Klay Thompson. He said don't do it. Even at age 77 he is a great judge of player talent."
The 2015-16 Warriors already rank as one of the greatest teams in NBA history. Another possible goal in the near future: the single-season won-lost record. In 1995-96, Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls finished the season with a 72-10 record. Can these Warriors surpass that? Time will tell.

Jose "Big Daddy" Delgado
I am a proud Oakland native of 58 years. When I was eleven years old, I watched my first Oakland Raiders game with my father, Jose Sr. The year was 1968 and the Raiders were in a playoff game against the New York Jets. We lost but I fell in love with our team right then and there. I have watched every single game since then, either in person or on television.
A very special moment for me was our first Super Bowl win against the Vikings on my birthday, January 9, 1978. What a birthday gift!
When they moved to Los Angeles in 1981, they broke my heart. However, I stayed faithful to my team and would travel to Los Angeles to see their games. I always prayed they would come back home to Oakland. When they announced they were coming back in 1995, I cried like a baby.
For the last 13 years I have traveled to many road games as well. My goal is to see our Raiders in all 32 NFL stadiums. I only have 3 stadiums left! (Cincinnati, Tampa Bay and Detroit.) When I turn 60 in 13 months, my goal is to go to all 16 regular season games, the playoff games, and hopefully the Super Bowl (as we win the whole enchilada).
On a personal note, I am proud to say I have been married to my beautiful wife, Renee, for 26 years. We have five incredible children, Joaquin, Dijon, Jose III, Roberto, and Nina, who enjoy the Raiders games with me. I have worked at Pacific Gas and Electric for 40 years, and I am just getting warmed up!
I have also been a volunteer CYO basketball coach for over 25 years. Over the years I have taken many of our Oakland youth to the Raiders games. To see them enjoying the Raider Nation experience has been priceless. It is then when I see a new Silver & Black generation being born!
I hope and pray our Raiders never leave Oakland again...but one thing is for sure, the Raiders will never leave Big Daddy's Silver and Black heart!
