Minneapolis Chamber 1 2 Bloomington Chamber 3 4 Northeast Minneapolis Chamber 5 6

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
@ToddChamberGuy
Minneapolis Working Families Agenda
If you have a business in the City, you need to be aware of this new City proposed initiative as it will impact all Minneapolis Businesses. The Mayor has included $200,000 in her budget to facilitate and administer this new proposal. The policy proposals being developed include 1. Earned Sick time, 2. Fair Scheduling and 3. Policy Enforcement.

This agenda is also being discussed in cities and states across the country. San Francisco has already passed Working Families legislation and I can tell you their version includes provisions that would prove quite burdensome to businesses here.

To their credit, the City is reaching out to the business community to work with us to develop policies that would serve both employer and employee. This Chamber and a number of other business groups are currently in a dialogue with City officials over the various proposals. Already it is clear that this conversation is paying off as some members of the public sector have no concept of what it takes to develop schedules. For example, an initial idea was that every business, regardless of size would have to post all employee schedules 28 days in advance. And that any changes would result in extra "penalty pay" for any changes to that schedule. Given the nature of business, I expect vary few of our members large or small, could make that work.

I believe both sides want the same thing; as much predictability of scheduling as can be accommodated while still running a profitable business, and that every employee is accurately paid for the time they work.

We will need your help.
As these talks progress, both sides will benefit from hearing what effect some of these potential policies would have on actual businesses. This means we need to hear from you. At this point, my goal is to have you aware that something is in the works. We are asking City officials to provide enough time to hear from everyone so that an appropriate solution can be reached. In this we are fighting an effort by some to rush something through so it can be enacted by year end.

I am not sharing with you the City's initial proposal as it was created without business input. Now that we have had the opportunity to share how scheduling actually works (for example), we expect new proposals reflecting the realities of making a schedule. That said, we need to be both vigilant and constructive so that Minneapolis can produce a set of policies that serves the entire community.

Stay tuned. If you want to discuss this further, host an informational meeting at your business, or would like to be among the team sharing their story once we have some specifics to consider, please contact me directly.
