Comcast and Field Nation
Creating Hundreds of New Jobs
Here at the Chamber, our primary goal is to grow jobs in this region. Success requires that we engage in dozens of initiatives from workforce development to improving the community's number of attractions to insuring MSP has a competitive transportation system. So, we are particularly excited when existing area businesses choose to expand here in a dramatic fashion.
Today, we celebrate two recent examples of Chamber members growing here in the region. Earlier this week, Comcast announced it will be offering 400 new jobs and expanding their Saint Paul facility by more than 1/3 (45,000 sf) to accommodate this growth. Construction will be completed early next year. The new jobs will include additional customer service representatives and managers. Comcast is committed to hiring military reservists, veterans and their spouses or domestic partners for these new roles.
Comcast will begin advertising and posting new positions before year-end. Those interested in employment opportunities will be able to learn more at upcoming area career fairs and are encouraged to review current job profiles and openings at jobs.comcast.com, where they can also apply.
Another member, Field Nation, a company that makes software that companies use to locate and manage field technicians, has raised $30 million in financing in its first major external funding deal.
The company announced that some of those funds will be used to more than double its workforce in downtown Minneapolis from 100 to 200. Congratulations to Mynul Khan (Field Nation CEO) and his team.
These companies are joined by hundreds of others choosing to grow their MN enterprises. We applaud all of you and will continue to work to ensure that your investment here is well placed.

University of Minnesota/Adolfson & Peterson Construction
A new 25-megawatt combustion turbine generator at the University of Minnesota's Old Main Heating Plant will cut carbon emissions on the Minneapolis campus by 10 to 12 percent. This $113 million renovation added the 225,500-pound natural-gas-fired turbine to generate electricity and a new steam boiler to recover heat for campus buildings. The generator and heat-recovery system are projected to save $160 million to $170 million over the equipment's 30-year lifespan. The facility, which will also get a new roof, should be operational next fall. Chamber member Adolfson & Peterson Construction is the construction manager at risk.
Eastside Food Co-op
Eastside Food Co-op began a $6.7 million expansion this year, which will include a full deli, community room, coffee bar, and an improved produce and bulk section. They purchased the adjacent property, for which they received a Great Streets Real Estate Gap Financing Loan. The expansion is expected to be completed by spring 2016, and Eastside expects a 30 percent sales increase in addition to bringing an improved streetscape along Central Avenue.
