Your Regional Chamber Connecitons

Minneapolis Chamber 1 2 Bloomington Chamber 3 4 Northeast Minneapolis Chamber 5 6

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
@ToddChamberGuy
Funding our Community's Nonprofits

This community is known internationally for its corporate philanthropy. Businesses here know they will thrive if their community is doing well. Here at the Chamber, we know that a program like Minnesota Keystone would not be possible in many other regions around the country. Frankly, other business communities do not share the commitment. They are truly astounded when we tell them about the 2% and 5% giving program so many of our members and others practice. By the way, this year's Minnesota Keystone Celebration Luncheon is Thursday, December 10th. Register today at www.minneapolischamber.org/mnkeystone.

Businesses are not alone in working to build a better community. Minnesotans are also known for their personal generosity through volunteer time and monetary donations. I mention this now because Give to the Max Day is next Thursday, November 12th.

Many of your fellow members are nonprofits. They join the Chamber to be engaged in the community and to share their work with others seeking both volunteers and donations. Please consider these organizations when planning for Give to the Max Day. They not only do great work, they take the extra step of engaging in the broader community through the Chamber.

The Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce membership includes more than 100 Metro area nonprofits from social services and educational programs to the arts. These groups help many members of our community, including children, elderly and vulnerable populations and they would all welcome your support.

We've included a list of Chamber nonprofits to help you make your decision. Please see which ones you choose to support, then log on to www.givemn.org to make your donations. And you don't have to wait until November 12. You can schedule your donation today to be counted as part of Give to the Max Day.
On behalf of these members, thank you for your consideration.

Augsburg Program Reduces Internship Cost

I know many members would appreciate having an intern on staff to assist with the work load while helping to prepare tomorrow's workforce. However, finding room in your budget can be difficult. This new program from Augsburg College may offer the solution.

Recently, Augsburg College was awarded nearly $450,000 for a Career Ready Internship Program. The school is seeking business and nonprofit partners to help create more than 220 new, paid internships during the 2015-18 academic years.

The grant will fund up to 75 percent of the cost of an internship. Interested employers are asked to contribute only 25 percent of the wages for the internship.

The College is seeking partners for internships in STEM, business, social services and public service agencies. Click here for detailed information on employer opportunities.

Minneapolis Urban Forestry Tree Program
Sign up now for trees in Spring 2016
To maintain Minneapolis' wonderful urban forest, the City needs the help of private property owners to plant more trees. The City of Minneapolis will offer trees for qualifying businesses and nonprofits through the Health Department's Urban Forestry Project. Tree Trust and their experienced staff will help business owners choose tree species, locate utilities through Gopher One, plant the trees and provide watering bags for long term care. This service would cost at least $200 per tree to hire out.

The project will provide and plant trees for about $25/tree. Businesses or nonprofits are responsible to water and maintain the trees on the property. The trees are available on a first-come, first-serve basis with late comers being put on the fall 2016 planting list. Businesses and nonprofits that pay a pollution control annual bill may apply here to reserve their trees for spring 2016. To qualify, the property must have enough space to accommodate a tree, and the owner must commit to maintaining and watering the tree.

For more information contact us or visit the Minneapolis Urban Forestry Project webpage.
