Annual Meeting a Hit
Thank you to all the members that attended our Annual Meeting last Thursday. We had an even bigger crowd than last year and clearly you were all having a good time as we shared the Region's 2014 successes. Congratulations again to the Faegre Baker Daniels table for winning the grand prize. Thank you to all of our sponsors, especially our presenting sponsor, Xcel Energy.
What is Happening at the Legislature?
Some of you have wondered why I have not been writing about this year's session. A couple of reasons; it is still early in the process and bills are just making their way through the system. Secondly, serious discussion of our primary focus, transportation, is awaiting two pieces of information.
Tomorrow, the Governor's office will report the new financial forecast. Many people, including me, believe the surplus will be even higher than projected last November. If that is the case, expect a strong effort to shift the discussion from the 10-year plan the business community seeks to an injection of capital from the general fund over the next two years.
The other piece of information is a study commissioned by the MN Chamber to verify that the numbers the Transportation Finance Advisory Committee presented at the end of 2012 accurately reflect the need for roads, bridges and transit. Accenture is undertaking this effort and we expect the results early next month.
Having both of these pieces will inform the debate as we aggressively work to move the discussion forward. This chamber has been the leading business association supporting increased transportation infrastructure across the state, knowing how crucial it is to job growth and workforce retention. This year, we continue to lead that charge. Our current position is that we need to provide the resources to insure that we remain economically competitive with regions across the country and the world.
Once the new information is known, we will be able to include more specifics.
