Registration for SW 305: Spring and Fall terms

To register for SW 305 for Spring 2014 you MUST complete this form. Completing this form is the only way to receive an override into SW 305 for the Spring 2014 term. 

 

To register for SW 305 for Fall 2014 you MUST complete this form indicating your preferred section of SW 305. Completing this form is the only way to receive an override into SW 305 for the Fall 2014 term.   

 

Please make sure you complete the form for the correct term. Permissions will be given to current CASC students in order of class standing. Announcements regarding registration for SW 401, the CASC capstone course will be made in the upcoming weeks. If you have any questions, contact Alice.

 

"Do you see what I see?" cultural appropriation event

The CASC Student Board is hosting a dialogue event centered around cultural appropriation on campus. With recent incidents of cultural appropriation on our own campus, the CASC Student Board invites students to a night of learning and sharing. Students interested in the campus climate, learning more about cultural appropriation, or sharing their story are invited to attend. 

When: Wednesday, March 26, 6-7:30 pm

Interested in minoring in Community Action and Social Change? Come to our upcoming mass meeting. This is a great opportunity for interested students to learn more about the minor, meet current students and alumni, and declare!  Pizza will be provided!

Virtual Open House is focused on providing information for students admitted to or applying for the Fall 2014 MSW program.  This online session will address many questions that students
have before starting the MSW program.  Register here (required).

Social Justice Art Festival
The goal of the Social Justice Art Festival is to examine the role of art in advancing social justice issues as well as to invite participants (both artists and attendees) to reflect on the question "What makes a socially just community or neighborhood?" We want to engender an open dialogue that encourages people to think critically about our world on both local and global issues which impact us all.

Homegrown Local Food Summit

This year's summit features keynote speaker Grace Lee Boggs and Joshua Farley, and will also be featuring sessions with community members and organizations working to strengthen our local food system and a new open-space format where everyone can share ideas. Learn more and register here.

LGBTQ and Incarceration Meeting
This meeting will focus on the LGBTQ community's relationship with the Prison Industrial Complex System in the United States. Through different dialogues and activities we will look at the ways that trans individuals face conflict in jails and prisons, as well as analyze data collected regarding inclusivity towards the LGBTQ community within Michigan jails and prisons.
When: March 30 at 8:30 pm
Where: Central Student Government Chambers (3rd floor of the Michigan Union)
 
Take Back the Night March and Rally
Take a stand against sexual violence and empower survivors! Singing, tap dancing, and speakers will be featured. 
When: April 2 with doors opening at 6:30 pm and rally at 7 pm. The march will follow immediately.

Diversity Monologues

For the final Diversity Monologueswe will be challenging the "victor" narrative to continue to push Michigan above and beyond its potential for greatness. For our final event, Diversity Monologues: Words from "Victors"prepare a song, spoken word piece, monologue, diary entry, or anything that you feel expresses your feelings and experiences. To speakemail us to submit your piece for approval.

A CASC Senior student and his classmates are collecting the University of Michigan Community's thoughts and experiences related to ability and ableism through a survey. Please contribute your valuable opinions here.

Raise the Wage Campaign
The Raise the Wage Campaign needs to gather 350,000 signatures throughout the state of Michigan to put the minimum wage issue on the ballot this November. If the ballot initiative is supported, it would raise the minimum wage from $7.40/hr to $10.10/hr which is 
much closer to a livable wage than the one we currently have. Check out this video created by a CASC student to learn more and sign the petition!

 

Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

Undergraduate Research Award

In recognition of the extraordinary academic achievements of our undergraduate students, the University Library announces the fourth annual U-M Library Undergraduate Student Research Award for excellence in library research conducted in support of an undergraduate student project. Students who have written or participated in a research paper/project from Spring 2013-Winter 2014 term should submit their work for consideration. Students need a faculty sponsor. Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program for US students offers students and recent alumni the opportunity to work and conduct research in over 140 countries. There are academic, arts, and teaching assistantship grants available. Learn more and apply here

Advancing Transportation Leadership and Safety Internship

The Center for Advancing Transportation Leadership and Safety (ATLAS Center) is now accepting applications for a 10-week summer internship program from June 2 to August 8, 2014 at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute in College Station, Texas. Five junior-level undergraduate students will be selected to participate and the internship will include active involvement on safety-related research projects with faculty at Texas A&M University. A stipend of $5,000, in installments, will be provided to support the student for ten weeks. Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service has extended its deadlineStudents are guaranteed an internship placement, earn up to 9 academic credits, and live in furnished apartments while developing valuable professional and leadership skills. MBA Prep Fellowship

AFL-CIO Union Summer Internship Program 

The 2014 AFL-CIO Union Summer internship program wants to recruit the best and brightest activists for a 9 week paid internship program that introduces students to the labor union movement. 2014 Union Summer internship dates are June 16 - August 15, 2014. Learn more and apply here.  Application deadline is April 15, 2014.

 

Strategic Corporate Research Summer School

Oxfam America Seeks Change Agents

Oxfam America is accepting 50 undergraduates entering their sophomore or junior year to attend a week-long training program in Boston, MA from July 19-25. All costs of attending the training will be covered by Oxfam. CHANGE Leaders will join or form an Oxfam Club and implement an Oxfam campaign on campus during the 2014-15 academic year. Center for Progressive Leadership Spring/Summer Internship

The Center for Progressive Leadership is seeking an intern to help support a Michigan leadership development nonprofit, specifically with tasks related to the Economic Justice Alliance of Michigan, minimum wage campaign, and alumni engagement.
