PC Shipments Decline in Perfect Storm
Gartner recently issued its latest report card for the PC industry: an update on the number of worldwide PC shipments in the second quarter of 2015. Preliminary results from the research firm had shipments declining 9.5 percent from the second quarter of 2014, the steepest PC shipment decline since the third quarter of 2013. The report also estimates PC shipments in 2015 as a whole will decline 4.4 percent.
In an article on LinkedIn, Marty looks at some of the factors behind this decline and what it means for the channel. He concludes that
thanks in part to an ongoing shift to higher margin products and services such as those tailored to infrastructure, storage and security, the channel is not nearly as dependent as it once was on PC sales.
Additionally, this appears to be largely a cyclical decline, due more to temporary events than broad structural changes. For 2016, analysts expect the overall PC market to return to the pattern of slow and steady growth.
Last year, Marty published a LinkedIn post looking at the discontinuation of support for the Microsoft Windows XP operating system and detailing its stimulating effects on the PC industry. That boost was cited in this recent Gartner report as one of the major contributing factors to the magnitude of this year-over-year decline.
