Techbridge Summer Professional Development Institute

The Institute - aimed towards after-school program staff and youth development leaders - focuses on the professional development of out-of-school-time STEM educators, particularly front-line staff and administrators. If you want to start or refresh your after-school science club, this Institute will prepare you from start-up through implementation. We will explore Techbridge's proven science-and-engineering-focused, inquiry-based curriculum (designed for grades 4-12) while we delve into best strategies.

Proven Strategies for Engaging Girls in STEM

1. Girls benefit from collaboration, especially when they can participate and communicate fairly.

Girls are energized by the social part of science-working and learning together. Provide opportunities for small group work, and encourage girls to talk about their ideas and consider all possibilities before digging in. Make sure discussions remain respectful and inclusive, and that each girl's contributions are valued. Girls are likely to remember not only what they learned, but also how they felt when they learned it.

Articles, Reports, Resources

'The Next MacGyver' competition aims to encourage more women to pursue STEM
Back when she was growing up, Veronica Eliasson used to be rooted in front of her family's television watching "MacGyver" with her younger brother. The long-running action-adventure series followed the exploits of an American secret agent who came up with inventive solutions to difficult problems by engineering tools out of everyday things. Think objects like duct tape, for instance. The show had worldwide appeal, and for the young Eliasson, whose father always told her she should become an engineer, it opened her eyes to the fact that science could be fun - and exciting.

5 Teachable 'Deflategate' Moments: Connecting Football to STEM
As the Patriots and the NFL work to resolve penalty issues from Deflategate, we can't help but think about what we can learn from the situation. Whether you believe there was foul play or not, the media's attention to 'Deflategate' has been both overwhelming and intriguing. The silver lining to this attempt of continuing the football conversation long after the season has ended (and 110 days before the season starts) is that there is a golden opportunity for some solid STEM conversation. We reached out to an NFL veteran and some fellow math and science enthusiasts to develop a list of 5 Deflategate moments that can and should be connected to STEM.

Facebook pitches in on 'Makerspaces,' giving disadvantaged students chances to tinker
On Monday mornings during recess at Brentwood Academy in East Palo Alto, kindergarteners can be found in a room writing code or 3-D printing their names. That's all because the Ravenswood City School District is ramping up its efforts to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education to its population. Menlo Park-based Facebook Inc. and other groups are helping the district continue the Ravenswood Makerspace Collaborative, which gives students in the district - 99 percent of whom qualify for free or discounted lunches - opportunities to explore some of the most in-demand STEM fields in Silicon Valley.
