The New World's Tallest Buildings
The Tokyo Sky Tree completed in 2012 became the world's 2nd tallest structure at 2,080' high.  By some forms of measurement, the next tallest are in  North Dakota and California, and off the coast of Louisiana.  Though indisputably the tallest structure made by man is the 5 year old Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, topping at over a half mile up...

Recent work has returned me to my birthplace in the metropolitan city of Houston, and provided me opportunity to reflect on my early architectural work in Chicago.  This Newsletter of Stephen M. Long Architect will feature a high-rise project from my internship, a tour of some of the world's tallest buildings both completed and planned, and a fleeting glimpse of my present urban neighborhood.
One Delaware Place
A development in the then-gentrifying Near North Side of Chicago in 1988, One Delaware Place provided a 40 story tower of residences, with integral parking and shared amenities at the base, 3 blocks away from the Magnificent Mile of North Michigan Avenue.
Return to Houston
Houston is the nation's 4th largest city, and its 2nd fastest growing, behind only its Texas neighbor Austin.  Its development has created many opportunities for architects - my professional colleagues might be interested in the AIA Houston job board, where new architect position openings are listed relatively frequently.  (Picture of Williams Tower looking downtown courtesy Houston Convention and Visitor's Bureau)

Sustainable Energy
A progresive policy allows Houstonians to choose their electric company, with 100% sustainable options available, like Green Mountain Energy for my dwelling.  Texas is the nation's leader in wind power development, and has recently set records for wind energy use, with new power lines enabling the transfer of harvested wind energy from western parts of the state to population centers in the east.  Texas presently gets about 10% of its energy from the wind.

Pacing for Affordable Housing
As a long-term supporter of, and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity International - who provides affordable homes for working families, I will be running for the city's chapter of Team Habitat - Run to Build in the 2015 Houston Marathon.  If you would like to maybe consider a donation, please visit my charity site.
A Fleeting Glimpse
Houston's Galleria from 1177 West Loop South
Thank you for your support.  I have recently been busy working on a variety of multifamily residential projects with the Houston firms of The Clerkley Watkins Group and EDI International.  Please write if you might be seeking an architect.

Sincerely,

Stephen M. Long
