SAINTS PETER AND PAUL EXCELS AT BENET SCHOLASTIC BOWL

In addition to the joy chronicled in last week's 'e' Blue and Gold surrounding the dominating season enjoyed by our champion Jr. Varsity football team, Saints Peter and Paul School doesn't take a back seat in the academic arena either.

Led by their moderators, teachers Mary Catherine Phillipp and Katie Zavodny Paski '99, three teams of seventh and eighth graders each descended upon Benet Academy (Lisle) last week to participate in the 4th Annual Benet Scholastic Bowl.

The competition consisted of fourteen other Catholic schools from both the Chicago Archdiocese and Joliet Diocese.  Students represented their school in teams of four and had to answer multiple choice questions submitted by the host school's faculty in the disciplines of English, History, Math, and Science.

"There was no preparation at all," said Mrs. Phillipp who chairs the school's Math Department. "In History, for example, we had no idea whether there would be questions on U.S. History, World History, or Current Events," added Phillipp, who is in her ninth year as a member of the faculty.  "Even those who competed last year acknowledged that there was a fresh slate of questions."

All students in grades seven and eight were invited with twelve students choosing to participate at each grade level.  "Our students have many after-school interests," mentioned Mrs. Phillipp, "but we were confident we would do well with any of our upperclassmen who had the time to compete."

In seventh grade, the Trojans came in first place in both the History, and Math divisions as  well as capt uring the overall title.  Winning team members included Wyatt Woker, Lloyd Abramic, Abby Pohodich, and Lily Johnson.  Our eighth grade team, comprised of Paul Skaluba, Luke Phllipp, Thomas Constant, and Finn Adam, missed out by one point at making it a clean sweep for SSPP.  Paul Skaluba, who had earlier posted a successful challenge to a question his team was marked down for, threw the red flag again but had his appeal disallowed.   Upon returning to school, Paul's Science teacher, Mrs. Vierck, verified that the answer the team submitted was, indeed, correct.

We couldn't be prouder of all who represented our school," beamed Katie Paski."  "All team members approached the competition very seriously and were anxious to be seen as good ambassadors for their school."

"We have an amazingly talented student body," remarked school principal, Karen Meskill.  "It never ceases to impress me as to the caliber of student we have," she continued.  "It's no surprise that the area high schools are thrilled whenever a SSPP grad matriculates to their institution.  This is further validation on the wonderful work our outstanding faculty does day in and day out.

Other participants from seventh grade included Brooke Pullen, Lorraine Gordan, Katie Becker, Megan Goralski, Kathryn Keeley, Emily Spellman, Jennifer Lazowski, and Alyssa Garcia.  Rounding out the eighth grade contestants were Isabella Johnson, Emily Mikitka, Colleen Lipa, Alyssa Potucek, Charlotte Keeley, Mikayla Radek, Mackenzie Relihan, and Kara Rivard.

SSPP Trivia

When our school was founded in 1853...

  - students weren't transported to school on buses, because the buses on the roads we see today weren't produced until the 1930's.  The first similar type of transport dates to the 1880's, when "kid hacks", which were repurposed farm wagons pulled by horses, were used to get the farm children to school.
