A Veteran's Story - Nick & Festus
Nick, Festus, and his family.
My journey begins on November 11th, 2004. While getting ready to either go out on a mission or go to gate one where I was assigned as part of my duties as base security, my life was changed forever by a 107mm Chinese Rocket. I was a Marine serving in Mahmudiyah Iraq when I was hit. I sustained five different injuries from the back part of my right leg getting ripped off, to shrapnel chipping a bone in my lower back, taking the shell casing in my right shoulder, taking more shrapnel in my upper left arm, and in the midst of getting spun around I ripped off the back side of my left hand along with four of my wrist bones and a bone in my hand. I also live with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

I also thought that my injuries never had an expiration date on them. The pain I lived with was only going to get worse as I got older. The embarrassment I felt as a husband and dad was never going to go away. This is because there were times I needed assistance walking and climbing stairs. I wasn't able to walk next to my wife because I drift when I walk. Little things like getting down on the floor to play puzzles or outside getting down to draw with chalk with the kids always had to be done with someone there to help me get back up or have a chair or something solid to help me get up off the floor. As a dad, I wish I could convey the feeling... (To read more,  Click Here)

THE PERFECT GIFT FOR THE HOLIDAYS! ICAN'S 2016 CALENDAR
Montauk doing a paw signing with ICAN volunteer, Annie
Don't miss out on a GREAT GIFT for yourself, your co-worker, pet sitter, family and friends. This isn't like any ordinary calendar! What makes this calendar so unique and special is the beauty behind each image that shares how hope comes alive through the spirit of an ICAN dog.
Showcasing nearly 200 inspirational images of ICAN's dogs, clients and handlers (November features Nick and Festus) the calendar was edited and produced by ICAN's volunteer and professional photographer Liz Kaye, and designed by Allison Hunt. Purchase one by mail order or at the following outlets!
PAW SIGNINGS!
The dogs are putting together a road trip to do Paw Signings throughout the state! What does this entail? ICAN brings one or more dogs featured in the calendar along with some volunteers to set up and sell the calendars. Our dogs will use a water base paint to ''paw sign'' each calendar for the buyer on a spot of their choice in the calendar! That could be the dog itself, a birthday, a special anniversary or more! It's fun, allows you to meet the dog and get a few sloppy wet kisses! At some signings, we will also have clients featured in the calendar, participating with their dog!

Wine & Wags a Huge Success!!
THANK YOU...

It was another huge success for ICAN at this year's Wine & Wags. We broke the record with more than 600 guests attending the event and raising over $100,000!

This free event is always special for many reasons. It provides us an unique opportunity to introduce the work we are doing in the community; and shares the message of how hope is being brought to people's lives through the spirit of a dog. Hosted this year by WTHR's News Personality & Meteorologist, Nicole Misencik, evening speakers Lynn Renn, wife of fallen IMPD Officer Perry Renn; Carla Morgan, mother of Nicholas who received Purdue as a service dog; Ann Stevenson, who recently received Jamie as her successor dog; Rick & Teresa Simmons, parents of Richard, an ICAN handler at PCF; and former handler, Jody Andrews, who shared her inspirational story of how ICAN made a positive impact in her life.
Carla and Nicholas
None of this could have been made possible without so many volunteers and supporters.  A very special thanks goes to our sponsors, CoasterStone, Southern Wine & Spirits of Indiana, The National Bank of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Yellow Cab. Also, a sincere thanks to our wonderful Wine & Wags Table Hosts, Deaf Community Services, Liz Kaye, Ed Stewart, Jessica Wilch and our furlough volunteers. And last, but not least, ''hats off!'' to the awesome Wine & Wags Committee for a job well done - Sharon Beauchamp, Leighe Disbro, Pat Hall, Shirl Henderson, Annie Jansons, Joni Kahn, Margaret Kosten and Julie Shutt.

ICAN Volunteer, Lauren, selling the release of our 2016 calendars!
ICAN Volunteer, Steve, shares Mimi with a very special guest.
You can still donate to Wine & Wags by going to DONATE HERE. Be sure to mark your calendars for 2016 Wine & Wags!  It will be taking place on Thursday, October 6th. If you are interested in sponsoring next year's event, please contact Dino at [email protected]

A Doggone Good Art Exhibit Helps Raise Funds for ICAN

Master artists Renn, Senna, & Maizie!
The works of the artists in residence at the Indiana Women's Prison were warmly received at their first gallery exhibit in Zionsville. Graciously hosted at Avalon Jewelry and Pens, 275 S. Main Street, the month-long exhibit kicked off at the First Friday event, July 3.

About 75 canvases painted by ICAN dogs and their handlers were hung at the Zionsville store and, on First Friday -- which was attended by four of the star abstract artists Renn, Maize, Ogie and Senna -- about 25 pieces sold, along with note cards and ICAN bracelets. But, that's only part of the story.

2016 is just around the corner, and so is...
PUPPY LOVE VALENTINES!

One of ICAN's biggest ''labor of love'' event (and fundraiser too!) is Puppy Love Valentine's!

Nearly 50 to 60 volunteers participate in this event and its success continues to build because of the support of so many ICAN volunteers.

We have some exciting new items in store for 2016's gift box and can't wait to share more news the first of the year! Meanwhile, there are three important things we need from you!

a) Mark a reminder on your calendars to place your order between January 11th and no later than February 5th! Start thinking about who you want to ''send the love with puppy love'' to for Valentine's Day.  Deliveries will be made on February 11-12.

b) Consider gathering orders at your workplace for a Puppy Love Bulk Order Delivery! For orders of 25 or more, you will receive a considerable discount PLUS a one hour visit with your co-workers and our dogs!

c) Do you own a business? Would you like to be one of the participating sponsors of Puppy Love Valentine's? Or, would you be interested in donating a special gift item to include in the gift box? If so, please contact Dino at [email protected] if you are interested or have further questions.

Want to help? Help is needed in many areas - running errands, help with baking and packaging, soliciting gift box items, assembling; and the week of the event - delivery drivers (find a partner and team up!), setting up the pick-up stations, assist with pick-ups, provide support with mapping & troubleshooting, coffee and refreshment set-up, driver welcome bags and more! If you are interested in volunteering, please visit   http://www.ICANdoglearn.org . You will need to first register and then click on the ICAN Volunteer Application to complete online. Be sure to indicate on the form that you are interested in helping at Puppy Love Valentines.
