UMSON Hosts Visiting Scholars

This fall, the School of Nursing's Office of Global Health welcomed two visiting scholars from American University in Beirut. MSN Candidates Joyce Abi Kharma, BSN, RN, and Mohamad Haidar, BSN, RN, ATCN, presented their experiences in health care in Lebanon and the U.S. on Oct. 14. Joyce is an oncology nurse specializing in breast cancer and Mohamad specializes in emergency care.

UMSON Receives RWJF/AARP SIP Grant

The School of Nursing has been awarded a two-year, $150,000 State Implementation Program (SIP) grant through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AARP. SIP grants were created to support the implementation of the state Campaign for Action Coalitions of the Institute of Medicine's recommendations outlined in its 2010 report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Annapolis-area alumni gathered for a networking event at Brio Tuscan Grille on Oct. 29. Dean Jane Kirschling welcomed everyone, and guests enjoyed the opportunity to socialize and partake in lite Italian Fare.

UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the UMSON Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshop, mock interviews, and online resources. Docents Needed for Living History Museum

The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for special events such as school tours and open houses. Scheduling is flexible. Welcome New Faculty & Staff
 
Jerrett McCormick, BA, has joined the Department of Educational Strategies and Technology as an instructional technology specialist. McCormick previously worked as an instructional technology assistant and provided media expertise to the University of Maryland, Baltimore Institute for Innovation and Implementation, Online Training Center. He also served as a medical photographer at the Mayo Clinic and a Digital Imaging Specialist at the Smithsonian Institution. McCormick holds a bachelor's degree in Photography and Imaging Technology from Rochester Institute of Technology.
 
Lieven Schenk, MS, has joined the Department of Pain and Translational System Science as a research fellow. Schenk previously worked as a research assistant at the University Medical Center, Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany. His areas of expertise include statistics, statistical genetics, genetic database searching, and the use of software designed for fMRI experiments. Schenk holds MS and BS degrees from the University of Basel, Switzerland, and is in the process of completing his PhD.

Angela Staten, MS , has joined the Department of Educational Strategies and Technology as an instructional technology specialist. Staten previously served as a project analyst/Blackboard support specialist at National Defense University, and as an adjunct instructor at Baker College in Michigan. She holds a master's degree in Information Systems from Baker College and a bachelor's degree in Operations Research Information Systems from Eastern Michigan University.

Jeanne Geiger-Brown, PhD '01, RN, FAAN , associate professor; Sandra Picot, PhD '92, CLNC, FAAN, FGSA , associate professor; Pat McLaine, DrPH, MPH, RN , assistant professor; Rachel Onello, PhD '15, MS '07, CNL, RN, CHSE, CNE , assistant professor; and Bea Lamm, EdD, MS '81, BSN '76, RN , assistant professor.

Clinical instructors Ann Hoffman MS '11, RN, and Anjana Ali Solaiman, MS '09, RNC, IBCLC, presented a poster at the National League for Nursing's Education Summit, held recently in Las Vegas. Their poster, "Classroom Simulation: Utilizing a Family-Centered Model of Care in Teaching Obestetrics and Pediatrics," demonstrated how to successfully integrate simulation, collaboration, and teamwork into the didactic curriculum.
 
Kristen Rawlett, PhD '14, FNP- BC , assistant professor, and Debra Scrandis, PhD, FNP-BC, PMHNP-F, associate professor, co-authored the following publication:

Alison Trinkoff, ScD, RN, FAAN , professor, has been awarded a grant from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). The award is a two-year, $296,700 grant for the research project Long-Term Care Training and Provider Regulations for Optimal Resident Outcomes. Kathryn VonRueden, MS, RN, CNS-BC, FCCM, associate professor, presented a lecture, "Pulmonary Artery Catheters: Principles of Pressure Monitoring and Waveform Analysis," at the Trends in Critical Care Conference, held recently in Philadelphia.

School of Nursing pediatric clinical students at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), attended a conference, "Combatting Child Sex Trafficking: Montgomery County's Multi-Disciplinary Approach," held at USG on October 16.
