Downtown Akron Partnership announces annual Green & Clean Day

Volunteers needed for 8th annual event on May 1

Akron, OH - Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) is recruiting volunteers for the eighth annual Green & Clean Day on May 1. Each year since 2008, Downtown Akron has been overrun with volunteers on the first Friday in May. Clad in bright green shirts, they put a deep clean on Downtown.

The goal is to engage the community in making our Downtown vibrant and valuable. Business employees and community members form teams to complete projects around their own Downtown property or are assigned tasks within the district. These tasks provide a sense of ownership in the neighborhood.

In 2014, more than 300 volunteers painted 156 feet of railings, 115 parking meters, 40 fire hydrants, 13 light poles and 58 trash can lids; collected 123 bags of weeds, leaves and trash; cleaned 20 bus shelters and 22 planters; washed 23 benches, bike racks and 32 ash urns; swept 11 blocks of sidewalks; cleaned 25 sections of skywalk and cleaned out 148 tree grates.

Volunteers may work the morning shift from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., the afternoon shift from 1-4 p.m., or both. Each volunteer receives a t-shirt, goodie bag and lunch. Lunch time festivities take place at Lock 3 and include entertainment and door prizes.

Those interested in creating a more vibrant and valuable Downtown, are asked to form a team of colleagues and contact Kelli Fetter at (330) 374-7676 or [email protected]. Online registration is at downtownakron.com/greenandclean. Teams must be registered by April 3 to be included in promotional materials.

The 7th annual Green Fair will also be held at Lock 3 on May 1, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Visit the Green Fair to learn about environmentally friendly products and find ways to make the workplace more sustainable and safe.

Green and Clean Day is organized by DAP, in partnership with the city of Akron, county of Summit and Keep Akron Beautiful and is part of Keep Akron Beautiful Clean Up Akron Week/Great American Cleanup™. Event sponsors to date include PNC Bank and Pritt Entertainment Group.
