It's a big one: a snake that can get up to 6 feet long and makes a loud noise when it's scared. It's called the pine snake, and scientists wonder if it's truly rare, which could trigger strict protections, or if it's just rarely seen.

Searching For Snakes

Dr. Zach Felix stands at the top of a hill and looks down into a tangle of kudzu and thorny, wild raspberry bushes. He's listening to a radio signal that's coming from a snake. It beeps every second or so.

Felix, associate professor of biology at Reinhardt, has been trying to learn more about the mysterious lives of pine snakes.

The search to find a coach to lead Reinhardt University's six-time defending Appalachian Athletic Conference softball team has come to a close. The Department of Athletics named Jade Geuther to take over as the next head coach of the program. Geuther officially starts Aug. 3.

"We were looking for a proven winner in our search," said Bill Popp, RU Director of Athletics. "Coach Geuther did a remarkable job with limited resources at her previous position, and her record really speaks for itself.
