SAT Word
of the Week

Each week Carrollton High School features an SAT "Word of the Week" to help students build their vocabulary in preparation of the test. Here's the latest:

Impartial
(im-pahr-shuh 1)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: not in favor of one side or the other; unbiased.

Here it is used in a sentence:  Our judiciary system seeks to recruit and retain impartial judges with high moral values.

New fact about the SAT: Beginning in March of 2016, the Math Test will be divided into two portions: Math Test - No Calculator and Math Test - Calculator. So make sure you're honing up on those arithmetic and fraction skills!

This year's motto:

"The best way to predict the future is to create it."

IB students' visit
to Montessori school
earns rave reviews

International Baccalaureate students from Mr. Tim Hawig's Standard and Higher Level Biology classes and Mr. Jake Richardson's IB Art classes attended this year's science-focused Harvest Day event Oct. 23 at Oak Grove Montessori School.

IB students taught a variety of science principles at seven stations and shared their artistic talents of face painting and pumpkin carving. Students, ranging from 3 to 9 years old, shot off water bottle rockets, compared magnifying lenses to light microscopes, discovered the ear and eye through giant models, explored the hearts with a stethoscope, and hypothesized about electrocuting a giant pickle (which they then did!)

Responses from the students and parents was exceptionally positive. Referring to our IB student leaders, a number of parents echoed this statement: "I want my kids to grow up and be like those students." Many more wanted to learn how a student becomes an International Baccalaureate student at Carrollton High School!
Parents: Please take time
to take this school survey

Carrollton City schools are participating in the Georgia Parent Survey program and need your help. The survey contains only 24 questions. You will be able to complete the survey using your personal computers, smartphones or iPads.

All survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for school climate analysis.

The survey will remain open through Friday, Feb. 26.

Thank you in advance for taking time out of your busy schedule to help us in this important school improvement effort.

CHS HOSA students tour Regents University

Twenty of the HOSA students visited Georgia Regents University in Augusta, home of the Medical College of Georgia and one of the only four public comprehensive research institutions in the state on Oct. 29.

The group toured the campus, had lunch with current students and visited classrooms and two medical simulation labs to get an up-close look at instruction. The university includes nine colleges and schools with nearly 9,000 students and plays a leading role in incorporating technology into the curriculum.

Positives in attending include small classroom setting, numerous healthcare programs and in-depth clinical training. The college will soon have a new name - "Augusta University."
PLC CORNER
Customization is key at the Performance Learning Center
The Performance Learning Center could be used synonymously with the word "customization" in the Carrollton City School System because the program specializes in building students' schedules around their needs. The program serves eighth through 12th grade students who desire a smaller, more individualized educational experience.

At the PLC, students work at their own pace completing assignments online via Edgenuity, and occasionally offline with the support of a highly qualified subject area teacher.
The flexibility of the program allows students to:

* participate in credit recovery programs while earning credits for current courses
* have a job and earn high school credits
* be successful while overcoming life's barriers
* easily participate in dual enrollment opportunities through University of West Georgia
and West Georgia Technical College due to more flexible class scheduling

* graduate early

The PLC also prepares students for career success by focusing on strengthening their college and career skills through job shadowing experiences, college tours, service learning projects and much more.
