November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month
...and in the words of IHS Elder Health Consultant Bruce Finke on the Indian Country Today Media Network: "It is a blessing to have more elders in Indian Country, but we know as our population ages that we expect to see more dementia. There are other conditions that contribute to the rate and severity of dementia, especially high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease and stroke. Those rates are higher in American Indian and Alaska Natives and increasing because of the relationship with diabetes." Read Bruce Finke's recent testimony on Alzheimer's Disease in Indian Country before the Senate Special Committee on Aging.

November is also National Family Caregivers Month, when we honor caregivers and the sacrifices they make to keep family members at home for as long as possible. Explore AOA's support services for Native American caregivers or write a personal tribute to a family caregiver on the Alzheimer's Association site.

Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries in adults aged 65 and older. How can tribes build a program that will diminish falls and resulting injuries? A recorded webinar, Preventing Falls and Injuries: Building a Program that Works, explains the building blocks of an effective fall prevention program.
This is one of many informative webinars for those involved in providing LTSS to American Indians and Alaska Natives.
New LTSS webinars are presented on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Because of the holidays, the next webinar will occur in January 2015.
